During the sneak up, I've noticed that the jingle dancers in Crow Creek South Dakota dance along side the women's northern traditional dancers in the same fashion. Or, they can do their moves along side the fancy shawl dancers but I think tradition dictates that dancing along the women's northern traditional is best.

I'm a woman Northern Traditional dancer and during the sneak up songs, when the drum stops, we stop dancing and wait for the next verse or push up. I believe all the other ladies do the same thing, just wait for the next push up to dance again. :) Hope I understood your question and answered appropriately!!

re: sneak up
A long time ago..only the men dance, b/c it is like a warrior's dance...and then the fancy shawl dancers would join in..but since jingle is fairly new..it's at your discretion..sometimes I do but the northen style traditional women's. or just let the men dance their dance..

I just stand on the side until they're done, or I just go sit down...
Pardon me, but is this an actual advisement from your elder? Do you realize what the sneak up represents? It is required that when there are eagle feathers in the arena, especially when it's men's northern traditional, all are required to stand in respect of our forefathers. Now, are you willing to change our traditions? |

WELL, AS THE SUBJECT ASKED, I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN THEY DO A SNEAK UP SO....:(
BUT I DON'T WANT TO CHANGE THINGS, AND I DO RESPECT MOTHER EARTH, LIFE, AND THE CREATOR, MY AUNT TELLS ME ABOUT THAT STUFF... AND IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME:) I DIDN'T HAVE MY GRANDPARENTS TO ADVISE ME ABOUT ALOT OF THINGS I DON'T KNOW, BUT I THINK AS I GET OLDER, THEN I'LL LEARN ALOT MORE, AS YOU SHOULD KNOW, I'M 15 YEARS OLD. LATER...

JDD: I hope your understanding of etiquette and protocol goes well. Remember every the northern plains and southern plains have their ways of doing things. From which direction of the arena can be walked to the separation of sexes during the intertribals (Men-counterclockwise & women-clockwise). And of course there will be exceptions for everything but a direction for not adhering can only be backed up with a visible reason. It cannot be assumed that one is going against the grain only because one wants to. With jingle dress dancing, Teresa Iyotte (Oglala Sioux) from Rosebud, South Dakota advised my sister that a red scarf should be attached to the eagle fan and a purse is to be held in the other hand. Now this doesn't bind you to do the same because you'll need to seek counsel from your family or tribe affiliation. Or others will say you can only seek advise from the Ojibwe but listen to us all and make your decision with your heart.
