Help!!!! I need advice......
Hello everyone!!!
I am new to this forum. I am also new to jingle dress dancing. (I used to be fancy.) I have never made a jingle dress before nor have I ever seen anyone make one. I have no pattern so I am winging it. I want to have an underneath dress with an apron and a cape. I have seen the apron open on the sides and I would like to do that but, I have not seen any pictures on this web site with the apron open. Is it more of a pain in the neck that way? The Pow Wow that I want to dance in is less than 2 weeks away:Cry . (I am stressing) Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jackie |

hay..well i would suggest to use a pattern for your first jingle dress until ya get used to not useing patterns..there not expensive if ya hit crazy crow or nocbay ther eonly like 7.95 i think
plus shipping ofcourse...but i would also suggest to buy whispering wind catalog i think its number 5 or 7 but anyway it has pictures and how to construct a jingle dress ...many basic styles..i found out one way its easier is jumper style and easier to put on too...its just a regular dress with no sleeves and you can use any type of blouse any color with it...i find net sleeves on blouses look alot better...becca |

Have you ever thought of asking an Ojibwe Elder for permission to wear their style of dress before you attempted to make one? It might be a good and courteous idee-er! A parable of advice: "never rush into a battle without your shield!" (even thought it is just 2 weeks away). ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I asked GOD
and he hasn't said no. Well we're glad you have faith. But, do you have an advisor? Who is the one person that you can rely on when you need assistance with your jingle dress dancing? The etiquette and protocol can be distinct depending on what part of the country you're from. So, I'd suggest that you get on track before you fall from jingle grace. |

Jackie , if it is in two weeks ...then I think I would choose another dress at this point . If you have a friend that is a jingle dancer please speak with them .
To make a Jingle dress in two weeks well that is not how I was taught . But times are new an I am not so I could be wrong . Listen to your heart . An yes I would speak with an elder on this matter before I winged it to much longer. |

The Pow Wow is over
I received the cones 11 years ago as a gift. I have been buying the fabrics I needed to make the dress over a 10 year period.
I bought the cape and skirt fabric 10 years ago. The ribbon 8 years ago I bought the bias tape, beads and came up with the design a year ago. Over the course of the last year I put various parts of the regalia together, with the exception of cutting out the dress and sewing the cones on(that is what I was trying to do in the 2 weeks time.) Whether it was right or wrong only you can tell me as I do not have someone to advise me anymore from my family They are all gone (BIGTIME SMOKERS) . I also found that the people who took me under their "wing" to advise me were full of "you know what." Believe me I went through 9 years of mental abuse from these so called traditionalists who were raised white and learned being "Indian" from books. If you want I will tell you my story a little later on today. It is kind of long and maybe you all could benefit from knowing what has happened to me . Please tell me though which forum do you think I should use? |

Then I would get a simple pattern one you like , listen to your heart , an allow the creator to send you what it is you seek. Calm yourself an listen. The dress should be made in a good way . Are there no jingle dancers around you?
The dress should not be made out of frustration, after all it is a healing dress. My neice is a Jingle Dancer . Mom is going to be here Friday an I can talk to her about this . I would hope there is someone here that can help you in this matter . I am not a Jingle dancer but do care about ppl trying to walk in a good way. Maybe someone will pm u with some help pray on this ... It is way to important that the dress is made with a good heart ... |

In reading this, you must not become angry, only the devil supplies you with those feelings. It is up to you to decide whether or not you should take these posts with a grain of salt, as with some frienldy advice it would be wise to do so. |

Thank you MenNie I always try to do things with a good heart. As far as healing, believe me I have been wounded pretty deep.I am working on presenting a copy of what had happened to me that you all can make sense of.
And quicksilverwade Believe me I totally understand what you are talking about with flashy neon dancers (you know the kind who can get a side job as a rodeo clown) makes up rules as they see fit. I understand. However I will not pretend to know everything, As I was not raised with the knowledge that I was part Mohawk I was 14 when I found out.(Hey its only about an 1/8 but its a part of me that I wanted to learn more about I will say that there are far too many people out there who are pretending to be "medicine men/women"and "spiritual advisors" What I like to call the starry eyed people who will have a gathering of non indian followers around them asking for spiritual advice. They give out medicine bags and fake indian names like they were candy. "Oh boy"will you be getting an eyefull when I finish writing ,hopefully by 9:00 tonight east coast time or sooner. If there are no objections I will post it in this forum. Thanks ,Jackie |

Jackie, I do hope that everything turns out okay. Please accept my apologies if I may have sounded contrite. It was only meant as a way to make sure that traditions are not broken. Patches may be the true believer but listen to us all and work from there.
