Both
I dance both ways. I sometimes dance on my toes and during the honor beats I slowly go flat foot then back upon my toes. Takes alot of practice on your toes, especially to switch them from tippy toes to flat foot during one song. But it depends on the dancer and also how they were tought. Both styles are good, as long as you keep your beat, speed (not slowing down) and a nice posture.
There are many ways that I have seen it done. Especially when I was in Denver. This Golden Age Jingler did her side step old style. She started off flat foot and she did this cool kicking motion during the honor beats and flat foot again. It was neat!! Just depends?? |

sidestep
i dance on my toes but i like the flat feet too, wish i could do it flat.
do you think contemporary should dance flat or on toes, or do you even think it matters, cause i don't but my family doesn't agree, "it's how i was taught." |

That is a great question....as one who is a great admirer of side stepping *watching on sidelines* and singing side steps - I love both styles - and hear some people actually criticize a dancer if they don't do it the way they think - refreshing that the responses are mixed - hence no right or wrong way to side step....

flat foot or up toes sidestep
Ojibway Jingle dress dancers should dance flat foot on the ground when side stepping. We are taught that our feet never leave mother earth when dancing to the healing songs via the side step. I have seen others do the up-toe side step, and that is not our way. I know to each their own, but I am just speaking from the way it is with us Ojibway people. Keep the feet flat on the ground and shuffle like no other. LOL.

Its nice to watch both styles but for the most part of it I'd probably have to recognize the flat foot more. Its just how its always been done.
Tiptoeing is funny to watch but cool. Go ballet or something. :D |
