Hi from Chicago
I have actually posted a while back here, but have been awol. I am Cherokee and western european and wasn't raised native, although my mother seemed to be proud of that part of her ancestry. We are Cherokee on grannie's dad's side for sure, and may also be on her mom's side, but that is not certain....you know how family stories go (and get mixed up somehow with other information.) Anyway, we thought we found my g grandfather on the Dawes Rolls and applied for citizenship with the Cher. Nation of Oklahoma, but we were denied. Turns out there is a person on the rolls with the same unusual name and born within a couple years from great-grandfather, so we are undocumented.
I would love to connect with other Cherokees out there in order to learn our culture as I was not brought up in it. If anyone would be interested, please let me know. I did speak with someone at the Nation about the whole Cherokee Identity question, and he really kind of "gave me permission" to claim Cherokee identity as it has been pulling at me since I was a child (I read everything I could about Indians...of course it was all history, because nobody ever taught us that Indians were alive, right?!!) Anyway, don't get me started on that. So I digress.........I will be heading off to the annual celebration in September in Tahlequah, but I would love to sit and learn from you all. Oh just an encouraging thought....my daughter (2 1/2 with Down Syndrome) LOVES Barney. Well, there is an episode about Dancing, and she is a music junky anyway. But on this particular episode, there is a man from the Sioux Nation who dances the grass dance. My daughter is sitting on her chair and starts JAMMING OUT! She loved it! She's not quite at the point cognitively yet where I can really explain it to her, but it seems that the blood is starting to speak to her already. It's so cool. And with that, my young'un is yelling at me to get off the computer and hang out. Thanks!!! |

Thanks for the greeting. My step-mother is of Nez Perce origin (and not far back either,) but somehow she thinks they're all dead. She's even been to www.nezperce.org. Go figure that one out!
Anyway, hope you have a great holiday. |
