My mother, may she rest in peace, had severe arthritis in
almost every joint in her body. She also had psoriasis, and intermittant severe cramps in her knee due to a pinched nerve from a fall. She was on some VERY strong pain killers-- towards the end of her life I was giving her shots of demerol--finally she developed either Alzheimer's disease, or a related condition (Pick's disease? Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease? Gerstman-Scheinker-Schwindler syndrome?); from the time she first started exhibiting symptoms until her death was exactly one year. Her doctor thought the steroids and narcotics she was on may have hastened the progress of whatever organic brain syndrome she had, and thus hastened her death. I have a little arthritis in my right foot. I showed it to my doctor, and his response was "welcome to the club--I have it in the same place you do".

Just found this thread I have osteo-arthritis (degenerative joint disease) of the knees and in my hands, vioxx was wonderful i was able to walk with out pain. I am alergic to anti-inflammatory meds so i need to take the heavy pain meds, not a good canadate for knee surgery, they say i am to young for knee replacements (47)
one would require 2 replacements in their life time, did 2 series of synvisc injections , the first series lasted 7 months, the 2nd series didnt last but 2 weeks, did the cortozone injections, got a prescrip for a wheelchair, let it lapse, had to get a new prescrip, finally got a wheelchair last week , refusing to use it , doing more harm by keep walking, I'm not ready for the chair, when i walk to much then i feel like i am ready for it, there are days i cant even get outta bed, the only exercise i can get is swimming , if only i would have ate healthier, got more exercise when i was younger i wouldnt being posting this, sorry if i am rambling on and on, i was wondering if anyone else out there going thru the same thing, how are you handling pain, etc

Adjusting to life inna chair
Quote:
Pain... I've lived with pain for so long that I don't think I know what it would be like to live without it. Pain management classes help - with them you learn to distract yourself a certain amount of the time. I try not to take pain meds on a regular basis ever since the whole Vioxx/Bextra problem. Those were the only drugzz that ever worked for me without just knocking me out. Habituation/tolerance is a real concern so a lot of the time I just tough it out. Inactivity only seems to make things worse. If you get too inactive muscles and tendons will atrophy. Atrophying is a painful process - both becoming that way and recovering from it. Do your range-of-motion leg, foot and toe exercises every day. As OA progresses muscles cramps and spasms (a tension reaction from the muscles around the painful joint) become more of an issue. Massages help that. Heat helps both the joint pain and muscle pain. Hot towels, heating pads, soaking in hot water are all good. Having a sweat is the best :-) Even just keeping your feet and hands warm (warm socks and gloves) help some. Isotoner gloves and a heating pad or hot water bottle are great! Probably the best thing I've found for hands are those at home "hot wax spas". It uses a special wax that melts at a low temp. You don't need the expensive spa thing, just the special wax because a crock pot on low heat works just as well. The wax holds the heat in to your hands and peels off easily. It's just as bad to walk around on torn up knees as it is to stay in bed though! Of course, I had about 30 years to get used to the idea that there was probably going to be a wheelchair in my future and by the time they finally let me up and let me get back to life I had to get back to work. I didn't have any time to fight being in the chair. I have found that I'm a much more pleasant person to be around now that I'm not all grumpy from having the pain of walking around. Feel free to contact me if you wanna/need to talk. "The chair" is a life altering event and (even if you know it is coming, like I did) it isn't always easy dealing with the adjustment. ~b2w |

I have osteoarthritus too. I was given medication, like Vioxx, and it did help for a little bit. Thenafter awhile it didn't help at all. It didn't help even when I took more medication than was prescribed for me. I thought I would have to give up dancing, because at times I could barely walk. There were times when I couldn't even walk up the steps to my house. I tired wearing those real expensive supportive shoes, insoles, and exercising everyday.I suppose I could have been in worse shape, if I hadn't done what I had, but when you're in misery, it's hard to believe that there can be even worse situations to be in. All of this made me very sad and depressed.
A friend told me about the Schiff company and a product they made called Double Strenth, which containes glucosamine and chrondritin. http://www.schiffvitamins.com/ You can buy this stuff in WalMart!!! Would you believe it started working for me in about a day? I could feel the difference. Before I started taking these supplements, I could barely move if there was a weather front moving in. I would be late for work because I'd have to sit with my feet wrapped up in a heating pad in order to walk. Now all that has gone away. Sometimes, if my window shades are pulled I don't even know if it's raining outside or threatening to rain, because my body isn't aching. Recently there are studies that say glucosamine and chrondritin don't do anything for a person, but I say who cares it's helping me. Maybe it will help you or somebody else who reads this. I did ask my doc before taking these supplements and it was ok with him. I don't have any medical conditions that would prevent me from taking them. |

I have osteoarthritis in my knees, back and neck also fibromyalgia. I have taken several drugs, tried pain management, and water therapy. Now the orthopedist wants to inject a lubricant into my knees. Well, I'm hesitant about that because injections aggravate the fibromyalgia.
My friend who is an herbalist suggested that I take 1000 mg of fish oil and glucosamine (1500 mg) and chondroitin (1200) mg twice daily for two weeks. It relieved the pain, but did not take it away completely.

Hi Tradional Lady, The first thing you need to is to consult your doctor. Next, by any chance do you have any heart device or any device implanted in your body. If so, you can not use certain Nikken products because they are infar-red and have magnetic in them. If everything is ok - Well let me tell you that the Nikken products really do work! They are GREAT! But nothing works overnight so just give it time. I can help you! Just imagine waking up with no discomfort and you can keep on dancing, walking, shopping, etc... I suggest that you use the following: Magstep Insole, Bio-direct cream, PI Mag Water System Elastomag wrap Knee wrap, Pearl or gold Necklace Bio-Direct Joint Sincerely, Topazhoney |

[quote=topazhoney]Hi Tradional Lady,
The first thing you need to is to consult your doctor. I consulted a doctor 12 years ago, that is how I am aware that I have osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Unfortunately they have no cure and can only try to treat the symptoms. I regularly go to an Arthritis and Rheumatology clinic. No I don't have any implanted devices.I thought we were offering advice to the person who started this thread.

Are you capable of exercising or performing some level of movement, I have in the past recommended simple resistance training to help counter the effects of osteo arthritis. Generally, but not always muscle resistance to bones triggers growth and repair, as well enhanced blood circulation may aleviate localized swelling that can lead to pain. In addition your diet needs to be sufficient to promote healing. However it does depend on your ability to perform movement.
