Does anyone else have a strange reaction to drugs?
A Cherokee friend and I were discussing our odd reaction to modern medications. She thinks it's an Indian thing. Both of us and others that we know seem to require higher doseages for the medications to work.
My doctor always trys the lower dosage first, but it rarely works. A 50 mg Darvocet is like a asprin for me. My friend has to have the highest allowed shots of novicane for simple dental work. Does anyone else out there have this problem? I've already noticed it in my daughter who is only 14 and my friends daughter who is 10.

I don't have much native blood in me at all, but I do have strange reactions to medications.
Back when I had really bad insomnia, I tried sleeping pills, and guess what? After 15 minutes of drowsiness, I was hyper as heck for the rest of the night. As for pain...I'm not a big pain pill taker but when I have to take some, the lower dosage never works. (kinda OT): Your post kinda reminds me of the studies they did with religious mystics/gurus/monks - they gave some of them LSD (normal dosage for the average person) and most of them just sat there like, "Um, is something supposed to happen yet? I'm bored and have a headache", but that was it. No tripping, nothing. |

Good question.
I don't really have so much of a problem with needing a high dosage of meds, but I develope immunity to most meds super fast. Usually cold medicines. I can take one dose, sometimes up to three then nothing. The first time I took NyQuil it knocked me right out and everytime I got sick after that I'd try it and it would have absolutely no effect. It's the same way with pain relievers. ???

I grow immune to every drug I have ever taken. Allergy medication, pain killers, diet pills, etc. Usually 2 or 3 weeks is all they work.
But I hear this happens alot, that is how people get addicted to pain killers, they have to take more and more to get the same effect as when they started. Caffine doesnt nothing for me, I can fall asleep while drinking a vat of esspresso. |

The normal starter dosage for the narcotic darvocet is 100 mg; and should be prescribed along with a healthy dose of acetominophen. Extremely addictive it is not recommended for those suffering from depression or prone to addictive behavior. So, I wouldn't expect 50mg to have much affect and can't understand why only 50mg would've been prescribed. If the same doctor you mention is the one that prescribed the darvocet at 50 mg I'd look for another doctor. Yes, addiction is a concern, but if the drug isn't used the way the manufacturer intended it to be used such as in lower than recommended dosages and for conditions it wasn't tested and approved for the effectiveness of the drug is compromised as is the health of the patient.

My doctors "fill in doctor" gave me anti-biotics that didnt clear up my sinus infection. after suffering for 2 days with a fire in my skull i went to a specialist. He said a guy my size would require 3 times that ammount the 'fill in' prescribed.
i required an operation anyway. |

I cannot take any cold or allergy medicines, over the counter or prescribed. They mess my head up real bad or they mess up my central nervous system. I don't even know my name when I take anything like that. As far as pain pills or muscle relaxers, I usually have to double or triple the reccomended dosage before they effect me at all.

Ok let's get it started! I have Fibromyalgia so they call it, and the Doc put me on all of these meds. I started taking them and I was worse thatn before. So I do not take them and I keep as mobile as possible.
Now I am allergic to Betadine, and penicillin. So I can't be around mold or eat shellfish. That is a real bummer! I love shrimp, but they could kill me. I can talk about hese two topics for days

Wow! This is deep, I thought that I was the only one that had a high tolerance to any kind of drug, rather it being a prescribed pain killer or just plain advil.. When at the dentist it takes sooooo many shots to kill the feeling and I still feel it, even after given laughing gas.. The last time I went to the dentist I requested to be put to sleep just for that reason. Well now I don't feel so like it's just me...
