Not exactly, but from what I've seen as far as the care/competence of staff and med/dent treatment offered, I'd say that the dr's and dentists were pulled from the bottom 10% of their schools..you lnow, passed because someone felt sorry for them or had a rich daddy pulling strings. My son needed to get a root canal when he got back here from staying on the rez with his dad for a year because the dentist did such a poor job on his filings and missed one big cavity. Yeesh! IHS is such a joke!!

Yeah IHS is a joke. I would rather suffer on my own than go to IHS. But I do if it gets too bad...like one time i had an ear ache and they send me home with allergy stuff. I went back a couple weeks later and they FINALLY gave me ear drops. Almost lost my hearing on that one. Just my luck...blind in one ear, cant see out of the other

I had 2 teeth pulled because IHS is not going to fork money out for 'cosmetic' dental work. This last time I fought the whole tooth pulling deal and made the dentist root and cap it. Surprising what some voice tone rising and flexing mighty warrior muscles will get you with a Richy Cunnningham dentist. It's no wonder us NdNs have missing teeth!

Yeah, the dr's and dentists all think we're too ignorant to know what good health care is. Having had to compete with whites all my life, I learned early on to speak up and ball up a fist when necessary. Too often we accept getting lousy care when we should be fighting for the same level of care they'd be giving white clients.
As a parent its my obligation to make sure my kids get the proper care. I'm not afraid to ask questions, or question the dr's judgment, either. One dr said my younger daughter probably just had the flu, but I knew there was something more to her symptoms and insisted on further tests. Turns out she had meningitis, which could have killed her had it not been caught in time. And this wasn't an IHS clinic, but a regular one here in Nashville, and not the free clinic either. As much as the state takes out of my paycheck for insurance, my family are going to decent places. Still have to be on my guard, tho. |

no equity in healthcare
The tribes who benefit from exceptional gambling revenues are able to finance state of the art health clinics. A friend of mine was away from his home rez and needed to be seen for a back injury. The local urban indian health (IHS) clinic wouldn't see him. Said he had to go back to his rez. What's up with that?! Any skin who can show his or her card should be able to walk into IHS (if they want to risk it
) and get cared for. |

My daughter has to have her gall bladder out and I'm worried. There's no money left at our IHS for contract health, and they're sending her to the hospital at Crow Agency.
Geez, even my step kids that live there won't go to that hospital. I'm going along and check out the surgeon before we sign anything!:( |

That is because you are. Been going on forever. Why do you think we have such high rates of infant mortality, sterility, and death due to disease? Sometimes they just skip the dogs and rats and just try the **** on us. Sorry! I just have no faith in the American Medical and Health industry. Like a line I heard in a movie after the character was shot he told his brothers, "Don't take me to the hospital! People DIE there!" |

re: IHS guinea pig
I felt the need to reply to this post. I'm having major dental work done (root canals & crowning) thx to my private insurance. It turns out the xrays showed a piece of broken instrument near the root. The oral surgeon took as much that he could, but there remains two millimeters inside. Now, I'm dealing with more sinuses and who knows what's more to come. I just remember that work was conducted by IHS in mid-90s and I was not told they had left a broken instrument. Isn't this negligence esp. if my health is being affected? I'd like to pursue legal actions, but I'm not sure where to start and whethere there are any grievance procedures with IHS. Had it not been for my pvt. dental insurance, my immune system would have continued to deteriorate. I'm open to any suggestions, thanks!

The daughters fiance' went to get his eyes checked and get new lenses .....k. His current ones were all scratched and cloudy. He went and this dumb broad was going to give him the same perscription instead of checking his eyes and upgrading it. He protested and she just snapped.... "that's what your perscription is....that's what you get". He left and is going back when he can get someone else. This was on PR.

Our local lovely clinic has a mentality that amoxicillan is to be prescribed for everything like: headaches, cold, flu, menagitis, athletes foot, and amoxicillan allergies. The last would be funnier except the knuckleheads have tried to prescribe my kid amoxicillan even though his file says he is allergic to it, and we remind Saw Bones about it.
My other nightmare with our clinic is contract health. My kid had a referral to an oral surgeon. Months later the surgeon is threatening to turn us into collections for non payment. The surgeon's office said that hey made repeated calls to contract health and never got a call back for 4 months!!!! I personally called, got a machine, and never heard back. The final solution was to go see contract health personally and see the dang thing threw. Don't even make me bring up the eye clinic here. Lets just say that no one at the clinic would help me until I started sending nasty grams to the big boss in Portland. Nice clinic here huh?

It sounds like they hire the same employees everywhere. What really pisses me off is the funds that are wasted on habitual alcoholics who are constantly coming in with bruises, broken bones, or whatever. Usually, most of the money on them is spent in the emergency room, which is very expenseive, and they often come into the clinic and disturb everyone else around them, but many millions of dollars are spent on them year after year because they have chosen their lifestyle. Then when it comes to kids and elders, who need surgery, or anything else; it's a big old fight to get contract health to help out. My husband is good at telling them they are responsible for providing us with healthcare, and what cracks me up is he'll even go as far as reminding them that," our ancestors died for this right!" Funny, but true...
