Mad Cow Disease

The first official case of Mad Cow Disease in the United States was found near Mabton, Washington. Mabton is just outside the eastern corner of the Yakama rez and about 20 miles SE of Toppenish. The beef industry is bracing for a huge impact as at least 16 countries have at least temporarily banned all imports of U.S. beef.

Washington officials and the USDA assure us that "triple firewall" procedures are set in place and the food supply is safe. Two calves of the ill cow have been quarantined, as well as the entire farm, and meat packing houses in the Portland, OR and Centralia and Federal Way, WA areas. Several refrigerated containers at the Port of Seattle have been put on hold by the government.

The one good thing about this is that the US has tighter restrictions on cattle than europeans. The Europeans had their mad cow problem because they take the brain and spinal cord and grind it up back into the feed. This is why the mad cow disease was so wide spread there. In the US this technique has been banned. This cow came from Canada before we put a ban on their beef products for mad cow disease.

However people should be going back to a traditional diet of organic food and natural meat supplies like buffalo and other animals.

It's all over the news up here of course, being local, and it's "still under investigation".

Fortunately the cow was a Holstein AND a "downer cow". Holsteins are primarily dairy cows because of their size and high lactation rate - they produce ALOT of milk. They are still slaughtered for beef, eventually, but since this one was a downer (sick and weak) it was inelligible for use as food. Unlike Herefords, which are primarily used for beef only, Holsteins are tracked by genealogy and this cow's pedigree is more "traceable". The dairy industry is very strict like that. Friends of mine are part of the big Dutch community in my area, and dairy farmers; they have vets come to their farm and run tests on milk samples from EVERY cow around twice a month. I believe there is a regulation requiring that. Beef industry isn't as strict. If it were a Hereford steer, they probably would have very few records of where it came from.

As Gache said, the best thing is to start getting back to traditional meats like elk, buffalo, deer and moose. If you eat alot of beef, consider buying organically raised/fed beef, or buy kosher or hallal meats (both Jews and Muslims have very strict religious laws regarding the fitness of meat for food).

Yeah what I heard today is it was one of 74 cows bought in Alberta two years ago and moved to northern Idaho, and eventually to Mabton, WA. They emphasized there is no evidence that even one of the other 74 cows has the disease. Keep in mind that it is a disease that is caused by feeding nervous system tissue harvested from other sick cows that spreads the disease, it is not spread through any casual contact. Also, it can take 8-10 years to become evident.

When England went wacko and killed every last cow on their soil over Mad Cow Disease, it made the rest of the world say "Holy Cow this must be serious!" So now it scares people really easily. I mean, how many cases of BSE (is that the official name?) have actually affected humans on the whole planet?

Nevermind that we had dozens of people DIE from the FLU this year...

McDonalds is using the Mad Cows to create the Mad Mac sandwich.

It is to go along with the burger created from lips and tongue called the McJagger.
