and we managed to get through the whole weekend without falling over from exhaustion... it might have been nice to have a bigger head staff so that we could have had a break for a dance or two more than the candy dance and the snake dance... :)

ndn,

Yeah I saw that too this past weekend.

They excused the adults after they exhibitioned and all that was left were a few adults and all the teens, jrs and tiny tots.

So's at 3:00 pm they were finished and ran out of things to do. So the announcer said, "singer's choice!" to keep the program going.

*L Nobody came out to dance until the arena directors started recruiting!!!!

I think it depends on the type of powwow. For contest powwows, there realy isn't a whole lot for the head dancers to do it seems to me. Really most of the time, is spent sitting and waiting for your group anyway. But for more traditional powwows, I think that there is more time for dancing, more specials, things like that which head dancers can help with.

Also when it's really hot, the head dancers can help to represent the dancers when the MC calls for another set of intertribals and the dancers haven't gotten enought water or rest.

Kay and I try to keep an eye on the dancers and make sure they are drinking enough fluids. Last weekend at Mifflenburg we just helped out the head dancers and it went well only 1 dancer had a problem with the heat and it was minor everything turned out fine.

You know what they need a head dancer for, it's for the shawl dance category at Grand Entry....NO ONE wants to be first in line, they will all hang back until someone else besides them goes first even if it means there is a big gap between the category in front of them and the AD threatens to call another category in....THAT's what they need a head dancer for....lol.
If people are out in the circle dancing like lost or unherded sheep, then I say they should not be out their at all. PERIOD. I don't know if that is what you meant to say, but maybe places where no-one knows what powwow dancing is about, need guides in the form of head-dancers? Thoughts on this Whome? BTW, growing up in Southern Oregon, we never had head dancers, now when I visit back home, they have all types of head's of something, plus all the royalty!

Pretty Typical Head staff around here:
HGD
HM
HL
HS
MC
AD
Its becoming more common that the AD and MC dont have Give-aways and sometimes the HS dont either.

Now you guys know "Colony" has twice that many !!!Cheyennes and Arapahoes ! LOL

You could tell on that first day at RE that they didn't have a schedule...or a poorly planned one. They were just winging it the first session, but it got better as the weekend went on. Even if they had head dancers, I've seen alot of powwows where they excuse the adults and the only adults left after that are the head dancers...lol. I even saw one year at powwow down this way where they excused the adults and the head lady left also!! When they called for two-step later that session she was gone....lol.
