Crossing the line

Part of a emcee's duties is to provide insightful comment and humor when appropriate.

Both "insightful comment" and "humor when appropriate" are discriptions that are subject to debate.

Have you heard comments from emcees - that you didn't agree with?

Have you heard some emcee humor that was distasteful, disrespectful and "crossed the line" sort speak?

If so, this is the post to sound off.

I remember at our Crow Creek powwow in 1994. There were some kids running across the arbor and he screamed, "kids, stop running or I'll kick you in the face!"

It's not awful, it was a message to the parents to control their children. The real world is awful when children running loose are kidnapped.

Pennsylvania

I was at a powwow at the Lenape Museum and the MC called all veterans in for the veteran song, he said, "There are no landmines in here."

He later apologized becuase someone who had encountered a landmine was rather sore.

they,

That is was a signature quote from the late emcee, Henry Green Crow. I guess you would call it extreme Indian humor.

I have been up late nights (actually early mornings) at powwows and heard the raunchy humor come out. Definitely not for the faint hearted or politically correct.

I have also heard emcees comment on the origins of powwow dances and had people say, "What the #&$?, Where did they get that from?"

Anybody else hear something similar?

I've been to a few where a friend of mine and we were sitting there and the MC had said something (I Can't remember this one) we both looked at each other in total shock and I said "Oops!!" and she said "Yeah, big oops". Usually, I try to listen to the MC incase he tells an interesting story or something that would get my attention. But, many times I'm busy visiting or something like that.LOL

But there was one Powwow just a few years ago when during Grande Entry the MC stated that it was time for the Veterans Honoring Dance, he never invited or welcomed the Vets from outside the Circle to come in, just the ones in the Grand Entry. That didn't go over real big with the Head Vet or the Color Guard that was there. He's never MC'd there since either.

Not everybody laughs at jokes that MC come up with!
My favorite was this past Summer
One of my favorite MC's was telling a joke:
An old "Kiowa" man was on his death bed and asked his loved ones to go get two tribal councelmen before he died,
They returned with them a while later.
He said good!
Have them stand on both sides of me.
So they did, he looked to the left and right and said:
I feel like Jesus now
I have Two Theives on both sides of me before I die
LOL
Well the Tribal chairman and a few counselmen were not amused at this joke
Funny thing was
The MC told the same joke the next afternoon!!!

Sounds strange for everybody knows that honor songs don't need any invitation, just honor and shake hands, put money on the blanket or hat then dance.

hey they, there is a message to keep an eye on your kids, I know I have been nervous when I see the kids to close to the lake and such, but we do not talk to our kids that way you know that. the time has come and gone when it was safe to let the little ones just run around free.

Who, raunchy humor aside that is alarming to those that did not know his humor, and out of line none the less. i am never amazed at what knowledge you keep tucked away in that hat of yours.
