What is YOUR opinion on this:

If two well-known individuals are on a powwow committee, Should or shouldn't they be allowed to participate in the contests? IF they ARE in the contests and win first, should they take the money or give it back to the committee?

Absolutely no entering contest!!!!!!!!!!

How does a committee member find time to dance anyways? They're supposed to be lookin' after the people who come to visit and participate.

Used to be that local people wouldn't even contest out of respect for the visitors. Nowadays, who knows? I'd say no to any committee member contesting.

I would just not contest. Then, you've avoided the entire mess, no?

To a degree, even the lowest member of the committee is hosting the dance. Would you host a party, drink all the beer, yet expect guests to bring more?

I think the matter is best left avoided.

Its really selfish to contest if you're head staff.

Why? Because the committee pays you (probably as much as or more) as the contests.

Besides its just protocol to serve as head staff and represent the committee and not contest.

I was thinking if you invited all the girls, it would still be okay to hook up or snag though right dude.

IMO, committee should definitely not contest (for all the previously mentioned reasons). On a related note, I don't think that drums that are being paid as host should contest, either.

Has anyone seen host drums contest? Wow thats crazy.

I think the topic could be avoided if people knew. But it seems like a lot of people really don't.

That is a big NO-NO.
My cousins held a Contest PowWow one year, and uncle made it clear that no one in the family is to participate in the contest. Dressing in regalia and dancing just to dance was fine.

The question was someone on the committee.....not head staff.
In the past I've been headman and was asked to contest , so I did. At some I've been to the, head staff had the option to get head dancer pay or comp and take their chances.
I've seen drums given that same option as well.
