Do's and Dont's for AD's

TMKJ had a good post on the MC's...

Any thoughts on some good advice for AD's? Responsibilities of, etc.?

This is a great forum-real good feedback!

Let's keep it going!

Experience.....

is the key.....Patience and organization helps....An AD has to be on their toes....Moving about keeping the pace up....Encouraging things....Mind you while maintaining a positive good outlook on things....Gotta be assertive and think on your feet....You have to work well with people...i.e. the emcee and staff....AD's i've worked with in the past who are on top of their game are Wade Baker, Kenny Merrick Jr., Cricket Shields, Jonathon Windyboy, RG Harris, Darryl Goodwill, Dion Tootoosis, Terry Fiddler, Ronnie Gooeagle, Michael Roberts, Gabe Derrosiers etc, etc....

I would like to add some thoughts, if I may. Be early and organize the set up if necessary, at least see how things are arranged. Dress nicely but as comfortably as you can. Visit with the committee to find out if there is/are any special ways you need to understand(keep in mind). Meet your Headstaff if you can and introduce yourself. Meet the head singer or host drum. Communicate with the MC your thoughts about the line up, some one to Pray, The Color Guard, the different drums in attendance-where to place them, etc.. Know which way is east or at least close to east. Take a note pad to keep notes if you can/need. Be available at all times. keep a watch over the arena as a whole. Watch your crowd for possible problems as well as your dancers.

Remember this is your arena and you represent the Committee as well as all NDN people. The great working relationship between YOU, the MC and the Headsinger/Host drum will make things run very smooth.

Cool first thoughts that came to mind.........

*Assert authority in a good way.....gotta be confident without being too bossy or arrogant.-----a fine balance indeed.

*Know the schedule and plan ahead.

*Have your veterans and elders picked out ahead of time for prayers and ceremonies (in case you need a feather picker-upper or an explanation).

*Meet with the committee on the schedule of events and find out what their expectations are. Some committees leave everything up to the AD and some want more control.

What responsibility does the AD have regarding money. During a giveaway as AD I was asked to count the money and divide it into two parts. The family was someone I knew a bit and they were busy setting up stuff and getting their list together etc. I helped them out with integrity and I know it was the best thing to do.

However, what does the AD do following a blanket dance. Is the AD responsible to count the money and divide it amongst the drums?

What about a hoop dance special where a blanket is laid out? I would say do not mess with the money and let them take whatever time they take to come and get their money. Do some AD's arrange and count the money so as to keep the program moving?

Some tribes have a more difficult time with this than others. It's the same tribes who claim to have been the first to do this and the first to do that OR that say we are the only ones with the "right" to do this or the "right" to do that. This is ok to a certain extent. Extremes in either direction rub people the wrong way

Yup all great points. Keeping the schedule is key yet lettin'em dance and sing is just what it's all about ezpezciallyy when the dancers are actually dancing (vs. the zombie walk) and the singers are setting everyone's spirit freeee.

In the southwest the Gourd Dancers tend to go well past Grand-Entry time, I wonder if that's up the the AD to like help stop it and start the grand-entry or is that the committee's doing? (not tryin to offend cause they say you can't & shouldn't stop it in Oklahoma, but this is the SW & again one tribes 'usual' doesn't rule all powwows).

I'm gonna AD a small skool powwow here soon and I just keep thinkin' on how to approach that, fairly.
