The AD and the different pow wows...

When someone is hired to do a job, how much autonomy she he have? Meaning, should people from the committee...or even other memebers of the head staff...try to push "their ways" onto the AD?

Would this only happen if the committee does not do their homework on the individual? Or should the person conform to the committee's ways...even if they do/don't discuss their expectations?

Is this a Tribal or an InterTribal Powwow?

I would tend to think that the Committee should be familiar with the AD prior to asking for help.

I think that the AD would know the etiquette in the region he is from. If the AD comes from a different region from the dance / event the committee may want to cover some of their particular protocols that are very important to them.

If/ whenever I'm asked and given no specific guidelines/ parameters I take that as free reigns.

The way I was taught, the powwow committee is there as a catalyst. Things are done at the event as needed by those attending. You pick the staff because they are knowledgeable people and understand the protocols that may required. As a committee we have been asked on occassion what we prefer, but ultimately we leave most of the decisions to the AD and MC.

Lightbulb

Every powwow committee has certain expectations from their head staff - including the Arena Director.

An arena director has a very important position in the powwow arena. But he/she is not a mind reader.

Many successful powwows have one important ingredient. . .

"COMMUNICATION."

Some successful powwow committees bring in their head staff a day ahead of time, have an evening meal, then an orientation. At this orientation, the powwow schedule is read and each person on the head staff is given their special instructions at this time. At the end there is time for questions and answers.

Once the powwow starts, everyone has a good idea what is expected of them and their roles to making the powwow a success!

Absolutely communication is the most important part.

Yeah like when somebody gets left, or somebody gets punched in the nose, when some husband gets jerked around in front of everybody, when somebody who won last year goes around saying the new powwow committee suck because they didn't win this year. etc. etc.

You would not have been asked if you were not of that tribe anyway, and/or knowing of the traditions and customs of that tribe, but you'd still ask the committee if they had any special instructions.

Alright, I just received confirmation that I will be invited to serve as Arena Director this coming October.

Maybe I'll follow FDR's philosophy, "walk softly and carry a big stick"! How does that sound?

j/k

I'm looking forward to my first "larger pow wow" as AD.
