What do YOU see as responsibilities as Host Drum?

Well?...how 'bout it?...

As one friend told me about a story of he and his uncle while singing during contest, "He knows what it means. Do you know what it means?"

I expect the Headsinger/Hostdrum to be able to carry all the music necessary. Gourd songs if necessary, Flag song, Memorials, Veterans, Specials, exhibitions, and general intertribals. I expect them to maintain proper protocol, demeanor, and a clean drum area. I expect a group to have enough singers to sound GOOOOOD, or a Headsinger to have enough help to Sound GOOOOOD.

I agree with everything you have said but would like to a a few more items:

The host drum should also be very respectful of others including drums that are invited or just show up for a powwow.

Being a sound man, I have seen and heard a lot of nasty talk from host drums about others. For example: "That new drum over there really sucks". A host drum should always remember when they were new and sucked as a drum. To me that's not a respectful thing. I have also seen some host drums take advantage by running 50/50s and asking for blanket dances to sweeten their pot when they are getting paid a good chunk of change. Let the 50/50s and blanket cash go to the drums that are not getting paid.

hmmmm....this just popped into my head....

Lets say for instance a southern drum was contracted for a pow wow and gourd dancing is typically not conducted there. The drum knows gourd dance songs and have sang them on numerous occassions.

When the drum shows up and a few gourd dancers are present, itching to dance to a few gourd songs, there are questions about having a short gourd dance session/exhibition. Who should be asked? The drum? The committee/MC?

What is the correct way to go about something like this that is not planned?

You should talk aabout it to the AD first. Then take it to the committee and the Head Singer. There is protocol for the songs sung and the timing of things. The Committee may not have time in their schedule to have a Gourd Dance.

Thanks Chero! This is what I was looking for...and yes, you are right, a lot ot times committees already of their events planned all out and it becomes difficult to implement something like that.

I guess quite possibly the best way to work that kind of thing in, providing everyone is in agreeance, would be to include it on the next day....say an hour or two before everything gets started (i.e. scheduled events).

I know if we were asked to sing in a situation like this, and timing was an issue, I'd suggest the next day before the dance to give everyone an opportunity to prepare. It would be nice for the MC of the dance to "be with it" when they are able to give a small explanation of what is going on. If it is thrown on someone at the last minute, they may do a "half-a$$" job at it.
