Giveaways

Where I come from, I always see pendletons, shawls, money, blankets and cartons of cigarettes being exchanged every weekend.

Is this the norm where you come from?

Do you ever speak for yourself?

Do you ever give away to relatives?

What do you consider a successful giveaway?

I've seen pretty much the same things given away. Including horses. There was a time, if someone was giving away a horse, they would simply hand you a stick. That signified the giving away of a horse. I wonder if that still happens anywhere?
I was taught that someone speaks for you. A relative, or friend. I was also taught that you don't give away to family in the arena. That doesn't mean I don't give away to family back at camp.
Any giveaway is a successful giveaway, in my eyes. If all you got is a blanket or a shawl, then that SHOULD be adequate. Its like the old saying, who is sacrificing more? The rich man parting with a thousand dollars, or the poor widow, parting with her last ten dollars? Thats just my opinion. Feel free to disregard at will.......

Me and all my 1st cousins are doing my granny's in late August, because none of her 7 sons are getting along, and they're all pretty irresponsible. It is normal and respectful to do this, especially when a person had lived in a traditional manner. I think we will all share in the duties of speaking for the family, especially us older adult grand-children who live traditionally. I think the give-away should only be done to thank all grandma's distant family, old friends, and the people that helped to put her away last year. They drove down many miles to make sure everything was done correctly in the Wa**** Ceremony and the Shakers songs were sung. I think I will feel it a success, if everyone who attends receives at least one item. I'm hoping, that we will not leave out any person, and that all my cousins will go home with a good feeling that granny is at last at peace. WW

O'siyo, im happy I found the right forum for this topic, I kinda got one topic off track about give away, and I'm sorry about that, but much appreciation for all responces. I have been to several giveaways, some had someone speaking for them and the last, we danced intertribal whey they went our and handed them out side the circle. I know at one pow wow I will have someone speaking on my behalf, but the other one I am not sure about yet, I still have plenty of time to get all my ducks in a row lol..I have an X who has gereously gifted me with all the tobacco i need, from dark to burley. So that is going to be my main giveaway, wrapped in red cloth, and then tied in long hands. Any one ever got it to braid? i was thinking of how beautiful that would be if I could find a way to braid the hands together.I have sage seeds I am going to plant and tobacco to plant as a giveaway,You know I never thought of scissors, that is something all could use. Im going to pick some up to add, I got me a bin ready to stuff with all kinds of goodies..Wado for the Idea...Im still taking my time of decisions for my giveways for 2 pow wows back to back. I want it to be something that individual would use or need. I had many ideas from the head staff forum, where i got that off track lol..I want it to come from the heart so I am really viewing your posts because there are ideas that i would never of thought of, so i do hope you all dont mind me stopping in often lol, Many Blessings my brothers and sisters, Much love your way

FREE CAR (res ride condition)

Does this count for a givaway item?
I have a 1993 Buick that has a lot of rust but runs well. The dealer didn't want it in a trade. He offered me almost nothing. I know it's worht more then nothing because it runs well. It's just that it has a lot of skin cancer. I also has a leak in the fuel line near the gas tank. I just noticed the leak.

If any one wants it, It's up for giveaway. Contact me and pick it up. FREE and CLEAR!!! It should run another year or to without too much trouble.

Wouldn't you feel bad giving away a car with a fuel leak? What if a family was burned up because of it.

Who ever wants the car would need to replace the the 6" of fuel hose that went bad before they took the car. They can do it in my driveway or tow the car out and have a shop do it.

2 hose clamps and 6" of 3/8 fuel line will complete the job. The parts costs is less then 5 bucks. A shop would charge 100 bucks plus towing.

I would not let anyone drive it off with the leak.

Goot; I'm sure your intentions were not to harm anyone. You know you could look into donating it to a non-profit, and you could get a tax credit with it. They will take ownership and have it repaired where it is needed.

I looked into that. Chances are the car would end up being given to someone that abuses the system. It happens around here all the time. The druggies end up with the free cars and the ones who need them dont get squat. There is a lot of that around this area. I would rather see it go to an ndn family that needs it. If I could, I would drive it to a res somewhere and give it away. I just dont have the time to mess with the car.

hmmmm... shakers? you wouldn't happen to be from the Pacific NW and either Yakama, Nez Perce or Umatilla would ya? I remember seeing a lot of the more shaker tradition in the invocations at Pah-loots-pu pow wow when I was living in WA... man that's been a while since I thought about the shakers.

Man speaking of give-aways... my favorite give-away item of all time... socks... if there are socks on the blanket, I'm a happy guy... lol
One of the most meaningful gifts I ever got was a man's ribbon shirt in a memorial give away that had belonged to my wife's uncle. I still pull it out and dance with it from time to time, that way his memory will live on, especially back in WA whenever I can make it back.
