I believe in honoring the Head Staff first. The Order I like is the Head Singer, Head Man/Lady, Ad, Mc, Princcess, Committee. Others as applies. I would then honor friends and others in the order I think of them.

Yeah, I agree with Cherosage, the public in arena give away is more the other head staff and the family stuff is done outside the arena. I have seen it done other ways but the first way is what I have seen the most. I personally prefer to call up the vets publicly though in addition to the head staff. Finally, Kio-Manche mentioned the stick for give away. My family always takes that to mean you are pledging a beef. Any other takes on the stick?

Hello,
thank you for your input guys I appreciate that! I just saw that list Paul put on here what do you think of that, like honouring members of the drums etc.? How would that be done? A donation to every drum? That list sounds good but sure is long. As to the stick, I haven`t seen it yet but I learned it means you give a horse to that person. That`s my 2 cents. Thank you guys. |

As for the drum, it depends I guess on the pow wow set up. Usually, I put gifts on the drum sometime before the dance starts for the singers and then I call the head singer at give away time. Whatever money from the special gets put on the drum that handled the song for me. This is only for the host drum/s. As for the visiting drums I try to cover everyone somehow but it is usually small stuff since you can't usually be sure how many will be there. You do what you can.

Unless I missed something what happened to the Elders?
I 've been taught they deserve the honor first. Then any special people you want to acknowledge, veterans, head staff, head singers from each drum, dancers and all singers, vendors, and finally all attending public. |

This is what i was taught by my dad too, when you ask someone to speak on your family's behalf, you offer them tobacco first, you do not give items away to your family. I was taught that giveaways are a way of giving back to the people, not only the ones who are important in your life, but to the elders, singers, children in your community. Who you honor is more important than how much you give away, thats my 2 cents

It was mentioned givin gblankets to the drums...where I 'm from the grandma's have first dibs on the blankets, always, that was something I didn't know until I was on a powwow committe. I asked about the blankets, cause i never saw anyone take them, & I was told that the grandma's were offered them, & they were delivered to thier cars later.
SOCKS: OMG, this year at Hiawatha powwow, it was cold & wet...let's just say that the hail never melted & the kids played with it all day. When the giveaway came, socks went first. It was a good powwow, & a grand entry no one will ever forget...what weather that weekend had. Suzze |

You have a few things mixed up here. A powwow comittee will usually gift a blanket and a gift basket to a drum during the give away as a thank you. The basket usually includes sage, sweet grass, cough drops and other stuff like their split of blanket dance money or cash payment as agreed upon. These gifts are sometimes placed on the blanket for show before the giveaway starts. In your area grandmothers may get the first choice off the give away blanket or also get personal blankets or both. It's actually up to you and how you want to do it.

I'm actually not mixed up, that's how they do it out here where I live. The Drums, get thier giveaway off the blanket like everyone else, & at the end, the blankets get delivered to the cars of the grandma's that wanted them. Suzze |

It could just be that your people are doing it right and others are doing it a little mixed up. I like your ways! I guess that's one way of looking at it. Very cool!!!
