Help Needed

Name is .
Email is bkm563@socal.rr.com.

Comments: I am a Scout leader and the Chapter Advisor for the Order of the Arrow, Orange County, CA. The Order of the Arrow is a very special part of Scouting that dwells on Cheerful Service and is very deep into American Indian Heritage. I am looking for information on Dance and/or
drumming and/or flute performances for my boys and adult advisors. We have an outdoor event coming up soon that I would like to have dancers at during our lunch break in our Indian Camp. Where can I turn to find such people? Thank you for your time!

I like the way you asked...

you approached this very sensitive subject in a good way and I as A native respect that and as a proud mom of a little boy with hair past his butt who just earned his wolf patch and a proud mom of a little boy who will be a Tiger cub here real soon. I at first wanted no part of the scout thing then my older brother put his boys in and I heard of all the events they went to ,things I certainly have never gone to or done and my boys has made many new friends and most are very open to us and our ways and If I see something tottaly wack I say so and state in no way Is that Indian we are not doing it!!! they accecpt that fullly and welcome any input we have to better their understanding of how we really are ,Now at first we had some looks cause they thought he was agirl but we get that every where its just not at scouts, I was taught for us all to understand each other is to educate ,now they come to me and say will this offend you if we do this or that? and that means alot to us as should it to others, my sons den leader has even came to some dances brought his little family and really enjoyed the dancing ,singing ,food all of it and wants to keep comming and that makes me happy that he in his personal life even reaches out to my son ,our family and OUR culture, it would be so easy for him in this day and age to just care about the scout stuff when he is at scouts so please keep an open mind as did I and teach as much as you learn and if the scouts get the cold shoulder from us who are they going to turn to ,to learn our ways and know what we deem off limits and well silly if they dont first learn it from the very people they are tring to learn about? My boys are working on some songs and are planning on singing for them as well and we as a family have already put on our dance clothes and I could tell my sons were proud to show them and talk about thier clothes and that made my heart so proud to see them strutt their stuff and one lady took a picture blew it up and now that is our new family photo that I hand proudly on my wall showing happy faces of my beautifull children and that I hold in my heart for ever!!!!!

Thank you for your kindness. We are trying to properly represent the Native American Culture. It is important to us that the youth we are entrusted with are open and understanding of the various cultures. This is why we have come forward in this forum and asked for help so that we do things the right way. We are not looking for the quick answers or to just pay out for something. We are looking to build relationships that improve our understanding and representation of the Native Americans and their various ways.

Boy Scouts and The Order of the Arrow

I am a long time Boy Scout and an Order of the Arrow member too. I think it is great when those who know are willing to teach those who do not. Our lodge is fortunate to have the teachers we have to help us along the way.

I hope you find someone to help you along.

It is a good thing...

It is a good thing when things are done in the propper way, scouts have gotten a bad rap in some areas, but my son loves it and my future Tiger scout cant wait, we were at a dance a couple of weeks ago and inthe front row behind the benches wa s alittle tiger scout watching the dancing his eyes were huge taking all this in ,I introduced myself to his mom and asked if I could speak to her child, she said yes, so I welcomed he and his family and said if they had any questions please ask away, well they were pretty quiet until there was a blanket dance and tried to give me the money to put on the blanket for them , I took the little boys hand and danced around and placed my dollar on the blanket and he then did the same, we finnished out the song then I took him back to his family, to me it was no huge thing but the way they acted is was some big thing but it wasnt it was me being the woman my family taute me to be ,if I were ever cold or rude at a dance at a particular person or people my Cheyenne moma would of thumpted me! But as one other said I hope you find the help you need and learn all you can.

I'm not sure where Orange Co. is. I too was in the Scouts and an OA many eons ago. One of my nephews is also an OA mamber. I am an info source for many of our local OAers. Some of my adult friends have approached me for assistance in the past. I also want to remind people that our Osage young men in Pawhuska have the oldest BoyScout unit in the US. I think they are still going strong.

I too want to thank you for askin gin a good way. Contact Tsalaghisam for contacts in California. PM him. You may want to contact Homaloosa as well. These folks are very kind and may be able to help you contact others.

Remember, that many scouters have not come in a good way before you. Many NDN peoples have bad feelings about Scouters and will chastise instead of educate. Sorry I can't help in any other way. Good luck. WaDo.

Eagle Plumes: our youngest son was in scouts and had his hair down to his waist. He got some teasing until we went to his events and set them strait about his family. This was the case in school until we had a talk with his class mates. We would get to talk to all of our kids classes about them being NDN. Our oldest daughter, now with grade schoolers of her own, came home one day after school crying her heart out. Her Teacher had taught her class that NDNs no longer existed and that she couldn't be NDN. Our Daughter tried to tell her we are NDN. (My Wife is Full Blood Apache/Azteca.) I went off with a letter to her and a friend of mine who just happened to be the Principle of the school. We did get an apolopy and the Teacher apologized to our daughter in public for calling her a liar. When I was growing up and in Scouts we did have some other adult NDNs to help influence.

it takes a bit...

Thank-you for shareing Bob , I know the fealing I have even heard adults saying that same thing and you wonder what cha thinkin???? It takes a bit to get some to come around but I wont run away and let some uninformed people ruin our fun , IT seemed like as soon as we went to school & scouts the people understood things a little better, we went as a family to one of the scout meetings for hearitage day at scouts and we dressed for them they really liked it as did we and we had a table of things they could touch like buffalo hair ,a set of my old moc's a bead piece i was working on and a finnished peice, the only thing we diddnt take was my flat fan and the boys dance sticks because of the hawk foot we were not sure if it would hook anybody so we felt it best to leave the things at home for safe keeping, when we went to school It was me and my oldest son dressed and talked to each class and did pretty much the same thing and all the classes made me a thank-you and each teacher sent me a thank-you for shareing, and it seemed to really work too the kids were much more open to my son and our ways I know we will still get that from time to time but at least the people he's around the most will be more informed now when my middle boy comes into scouts hope fully his travels will be a bit somoother being that his brother taute them a thing or too.he will be a tiger scout as soon as he graduates kindergaten and he is zooming threw the book for now because of all teh nature things being that they both love animals so its been abreeze but I know it will get more challenging for them but we like the idea of helping out every body as much as we can beacuse some of these little boys family life is not the best so if we can make scouts fun for them and help em out we are all for it!!! and keep them out of trouble in the future as much as we can but we are enjoying it and my oldest will get his recruiter patch for bringing in his lil bro and again thans Bob for shareing it helps me to hear that we are not eh only ones going hrew these same things!

impressed and a lil jelous lol, reading this remembering my days in OA back in the 70s. Great to see someone trying to bring reality to the scouts and hope for your success. If it works do us a favor and spread your success story's to the other states OA's, my wife has a group of ndn's here in st louis that would be great for such an idea (well here in st. louis at least lol). I think our leaders back then watched a bit too much f-troop lol.

You say that you have an "event coming up soon." I'm not sure what that means. But let me warn you that if you are simply trying to throw something together, you will be disappointed and will also disappoint those who help you.

I might recommend that you instead seek someone native to come and talk about singing and dancing, the importance of such this year. Learn from the discussion, build the relationships, go to some powwows throughout the next year, etc. Then maybe at next year's event or the year after, you'll be in a better position for success and for getting some respect from the native community for doing things the right way.

Just a thought from a fellow 1980 Eagle.

Scouting has takin a bad rap for years. But also they have deserved it at times too. There are many fine people from CA who are non-ndn who know there stuff if your area. If you take the time and do it right and respect the culture you will go far. PM me for more information.
