What if there is an injury during contest?
What should the judges,mc, or ad do if a dancer is injured or passes out during a contest?
I've seen 2 things happen...once was a knee injury that caused a fancy dancer to go down and the drum stopped and the mc got the arena cleared. They re-danced the contest after the dancer was carried off. Last powwow I went to I saw a jingle dancer pass out and everyone kept going - even when some other dancers who were EMTs went out onto the floor to help the girl. Is it just a judgment call by head staff? |

Yes it ruins everyone's fun, and yes it messes up the contest, but I have seen many injuries at non-contest powwows and if the dancing doesn't stop, it is very difficult for emergency personel to attend to the injured party. Someone else's well being is worth more to me than the joy of watching the dance. I feel the same way on contests, but I have never contested, so maybe there are other opinions.
I can understand how it would be problematic, but I think everyone can agree that if it were them, they'd want "center stage" for just a few moments.

I would stop the dancing even during a contest if a dancer goes down. And redance the contest.

Hi
If MC See something like a dancer going down or a train wreck happening he would call out "Emergency happening" and the head staff would act like stopping the dancing for the party in need of help.

Definately stop the dancing temporarily. You know everyone is responsible for themselves and there health; but it is the descent and safe thing to do by insuring that a stretcher and/or ambulance can get to the injured party in a timely manner. Our powwow committee is just dealing with this issue and the set-up of our powwow, we have to meet the guidelines set forth by the borough that owns the land we will be on, and this can be a real safety issue or hazard.

to take it a step further...
it's unfortunate....
but i've been @ a pw before where an elder passed away and the powwow kept goin'... it was during a round of intertribals and of course the mc was askin' for medical attention to that part of the arena where the elder was already down... (but no one thought much of it) and the dancers kept dancing around and the pw kept on... i don't think the mc or head staff realized the severity of the problem because they cleared the arena only when the ambulance and emt's came to tend to him before he passed... THEN... in that same area... another person passed out and they still kept on dancing... but... i def think the mc should quit the competition and tend to the needs of the dancer, cause you may just never know how severe the problem may be...

Wouldnt you think a one would get medical help for another.. I mean its only a contest..You would think a human life is way way way more important the contest money and first place.

pw injury
i agree, the mc, should announce everyone to clear the areana, you can always redo the contest, injuries and sickness are more important. dancers be careful out there, especially in the heat, holes etc.

Proper protocol in any event should be to stop all activity until the person who has been injured or has fallen is assisted to a safe location where medical attention may be administered, including any immediate attention in the arena until the injured party can be transported safely.
Then it is up to the MC to re-start the dance when the MC feels it is appropriate. This protocol should be done regardless of an injury disclaimer clause on the registration form, since the disclaimer is there to protect the pow wow committee from lawsuits pertaining to injury.
