PlentyF and ac_m,

If someone dies in the arena, "my opinion is" that the whole powwow should be stopped for that session. Before anyone enters the arena I would DEFINITELY have someone pray over the spirit of the deceased, the arena and for all those in attendance.

Stopping a powwow for medical attention is common sense. If the dancers are allowed to dance while the individual is getting medical attention, it puts that person, the EMTs and the dancers at risk for more injury(s).

Based upon what I just read, some powwows & some forms of powwow dancing can be too intense for some.
IMO based upon this reply, some of the dances should be adjusted in length or intensity Also, some of the songs may be too intense. One more thing I'm concerned about as a result of a horrific dream is the flammability of a person's regalia.
Some parts of a person's regalia from testing & experience are just totally unsafe in flamability concerns. Can you imagine the horrific reality of hearing a franitc shout of DANCER ON FIRE! STOP THE DANCE IMMEDIATELY!!!! Some parts of regalia are just as extremely dangerous in flammability equal to that of nitrate film!

i have been to a few pow wows where there was a medical emergency or two. the arena staff made every effort to make sure medical needs were met. also there were elders that were faint or other, and emcees called out over the pa that an elder needed attention.

I remember a dance I was at in OK back in the mid '80s. My cousins and I went to Seminole Ok for the tribal dance. I was asked to 2 step and during the 2 step we were winding a round and as I looked into the guy passing me I saw his eyes roll back into his head. He fell to the ground. I tried to help with CPR with another until the Medics arrived. they took him away in the ambulance. The Man was a Local Judge. He was not able to be revived neither by me nor the EMTs.

After the ambulance left the grounds, the Dance continued. I chose not to go back out there at that time. I was amased they went on with the dance like that. My 2 step partner understood and agreed.
