I just saw this head staff position at the Oneida powwow.
What do you think? Should powwows include a Head Female Dancing judge? Why or why not?

I would say definitely so. If the pow wow is large enough to warrant a head dance judge, I would say break it up into a Head Male Judge and Head Female Judge. More than likely a head female judge would have a better idea of who to pick for judges for the ladie's categories than a man. I think it's a good idea.

I have seen this many times in Ontario and Michigan, Chicago, some in Wisc.
It is more prevalent in the powwows with over 400 dancers. I've done head male judge quite a few times and it is much easier and faster to get through the contests. It's great when time is a factor. The alternating of male/female contests goes much smoother. |

Yes, women should have the opportunity to be head dance judge just like the men. I don't think they have any business being head drum judge, but dance judge is different. I know several women who have had the honor of this position at large casino pow-wows and it has been fine. In fact, they have their act together as far as having their judges ready to go and alternates available without waiting.

I also think it's okay for women to be head judges. And I also think men should judge men and women should judge women. I know some women who like men judges because they think they have a better chance of placing higher. Don't ask me their reasoning behind that. Maybe they slept with some of the men (just kidding).

*L I guess no one can discount that possibility.... If there was only to be one judge at a powwow . . . how appropriate would it be to have a female as the HEAD and only dance judge?

Head judges are a recent addition to the powwow. It's not tradish, so people can't say that , traditionally, women don't belong in that position.
Women can select good, fair judges just as well as men. Or.......... they can select bad, unfair judges just as well as men too. Gender doesn't factor into judge selection. Good or bad, happy or sad. Last edited by Kiwehnzii; 06-09-2005 at 09:57 AM. |

At Denver March they have had women for the head dance judges, northern and southern. I think one year Sandra Black Bear and Salina Todome were the head dance judges, (N & S), and I remember one year where Grace HMH was the head northern dance judge. They picked the judges for all the dance contests, men's and women's. Also at Red Earth one year, Grace and Salina were the head northern and southern dance judges. I think women can do just as good a job as a man, sometimes better because they might pay attention to all the little relationships (good and bad) among competitors. The only bad thing is that I think they are subject to more complaints from people just because they are women.
