Head Man

Hello everyone! So lets get into it... what are the qualities and responsibilities of a head man/ woman? What do you expect from your head man/ woman? Have a great day and take care out there in your travels!

First of all they have to want to do the job as a head dancer. They must be tough but, also personable with people. They should know all or most of the dance styles, and surely know how to line up people for grand-entry. They need to be willing to lead out all or most of the dances and expect to be present during the whole powwow. They should be a person of respect, and look at being asked an honor.

The head staff are/should be respectable. They are being honored for their ability to dance, looking good(poise), knowledge of the arena(dancing), personality, and the ability to bring other dancers(others).

The head staff are to be at the arena in plenty of time to assist however they can. They should be the first in and the last out. They should be willing to help the committee in any aspect they are able. They should consult with the MC and AD as to the agenda that will be happening and when. They must be able to lead any dance asked of them,(2 step, Buffalo, Snake, Trot/Hop, Specials, etc) The head dancers are the representative of the committee/MC/AD for the rest of dancers. All eyes are on the headstaff, no playing around as Aunt Polly would say. "Straighten up(with a slap, or a tug on the ear)" . I would rely on my family and elders to keep me in line and on time.

With this honor of being selected I was taught to give a little something of thanks for this honor. A giveaway is the proper way to demonstrate this thankfulness. Different tribes have different ways to show this thankfulness. I was taught to give as we are able. Some people can give away cars(horses) and some of us have to use Wal-mart blankets.
