Don't have a private convo with someone, while the mic is still on and close enough to hear.... LOL
DO announce contest categories at least one song ahead, so dancers and singers are ready to go..... |

well lets see, Hmmmmm
unless youv'e attempted to MC at a major powwow don't even go there. I've seeena nd heard a lot of good MC's choke up and lose it. It takes a lot of intelligence and quick thinking to make a Powwow a success. I've seen some MC get so wrapped up in being too talkative and some who don't even talk. telling jokes is a good thing as a filler. but don't get carried away telling jokes. A good MC can balance all of this while being entertaining as well as being informative. Not all Indians and non Indians know about Powwow's each are unique and as is each tribe. So tribes are very easy to work with some aren't. there are certain protocols that need to be done before you can be successful in the MCing business. I enjoy it a great deal but sometimes I need to take a break and just chill after a major event. whew glad its done kinda thing. no pressure |

Do brush and floss before a major Powwow! Puleese. it makes your job and the committees job a lot easier to talk to you and you to them. if you get my drift. LOL
Change clothing each day avoid spend all night at the 49 and expect to be fresh for the Grand Entry the next day. Carry Visine at all times as well as breath mints. Don't frink too much soft drinks as you know they will go right thru you. kinda bad if your the only MC at a powwow. I've worked alone and I know from experience.LOL |

SJ,
I can relate to everything u posted. Thanx 4 the feedback. I especially know what u mean about the stress. It's a lot of fun tho! Yeah.... I don't like to get carried away on the jokes....but it's nice to have a few really good ones on hand for the "down" time. I'm just start'n out. I know I can't fancy dance 4 ever (competitively anyway). I started out by announcing specials for families. After that some good folks offered me some MC work. It's go'n good so far. I'm the MC @ Utah State this weekend! FF

Keep the drum rotation in the order that they are situated ... not in the order that they sign up. This helps in maintaining a balanced share of songs from each drum and really helps the sound person if there are roaming microphones.
The other thing is with Grand Entry songs. Some MCs have one of the Host Drums sing the entire GE song while others have as many drums as possible sing four times through. My thing about this is that on subsequent GEs, the GE should start with the Host Drums then skip to the next drum in the rotation order instead of starting at the top again. This gives as many visiting drums as possible a chance to sing during the Grand Entries. |

Just keep it simple is my policy! if ya get a lot of drums and theres a huge crowd, it nearly impossible to keep every one happy, theres always some knuckle head gonna complain anyways, besides its the committee who made the rules not the MC. MC's a hired gun, LOL so da speak it's a lot easy to just keep the Grand Entry to the Host Drum, thats why they are called the host drum. they are paid well for it. Anyway the bottom line is to have fun and get the Powwow done on time and on budget. Am I right Powwow Committee?
