Do' & Don'ts eh?!
I know this MC biznezz is varied, because sometimes I'm asked to be the MC for banquets and award ceremonies or even talent shows, and half the time I'm wingin' it just to keep the event moving and to be constantly talking can be a chore. People tend to think that is all you want to do is talk, sometimes you want to just shut everything off and have some quiet time, especially after a pow-wow,....talking for nine straight hours tends to wear on you. Its good to have two MC's at some of the bigger pow-wows,or even at the smaller ones too just to keep things rollin'. I see that alot of the flow tends to fall on the Arena Director's where they are the ones who have to really be busy to keep things rolling. But I'm still trying to break out of being so Indinish in my manner of speaking, like trying to eliminate the "Um...ah's and just speak straight out like some of Professional Rodeo announcers. I got my MC start talking at giveaways and namegivings and when I started speaking through a microphone and my voice became amplified, boy I thought, yeah I could do this! But there's alot more to it then just gaabin' though a microphone. You gotta know what you're talking about and understand your own tribal ways and also the ways of other tribes,so Pow-Wow announcing is very important to relay to all the listeners a good description of what is to be announced over the PA system. Some things pertaining to traditions can be very sensitive to openly talk about over the mic,...I find myself elaborating if I don't truly understand about some particular customs. I know as an MC you want your listening audience to understand what happens at our pow-wows,especially the non-native people, but I do realize too that some things are best left unsaid. Some of our ceremonies that we as Indian People perform don't need to be thoroughly explained when we ourselves already understand what is happening. E-kush,....

Dave, I could not have said it any better. Thanks! OK now, Sound guy to sound guy...... How much hair is left on your head from a MC who doesn't work with the sound guy very well? I guess we can visit and discuss this at the hair transplant doctor's office. Sorry! I didn't mean to let out a sound trade secret. ROFLMAO Ken

One told a very demeaning joke about a "drunken Indian" while another told a joke about Michael Jackson and pedophilia that made both of us want to leave. I have been an entertainer my entire adult life and I know where to draw the line when I'm speaking to an audience. When I heard these jokes I couldn't help but feel awful for the parents of the tiny tots who had to hear these things. The MC at this past weekends powwow when calling a drum during roll call actually said, "Where the hell is......" Now, that of course isn't all that offensive to most of us, but this was allegedly a traditional powwow. So, my advice I suppose, not that anyone asked for it lol, is to be comfortable with your audience, but remember that there are little children and elders in the audience who may not find what most of us find amusing. Respect is something that is universal to all nations, so let's try and keep it first and foremost in our minds when we speak. Now, a joke..... The lone ranger and tonto are out on the plains, camped out for the night when after a few hours of saying nothing TLR breaks the silence and says to tonto, "You know, when I'm lying here in my bedroll, and I look up and see the stars like this, it tells me that no matter how bad things get, no matter how hard life may be, God is in heaven looking out for us, the universe is a beautiful place full of wonder, and we are but small, insignificant specks in the sands of time." He turns to tonto and says, "What does it tell you, tonto, when you look up and you can see the stars like this, so clear and beautiful?" Tonto takes a moment, stares up at the sky and says, "When I look up and can see the stars like this Kemosabe, it tells me.....someone stole our tent!"

I just finished up doing Spirit of the Bison Powwow in Austinburg Ohio this weekend. The MC was "Right On". He did all the right things. He was first of all, "On Time". The talked with everyone about what was necessary to put on a great powwow. He worked with the AD very vell. He was very respectful and kind to everyone. His speaking voice was clean and clear. Jokes were kept to a minimum and were funny and clean. This guy did no harm to anyone. He had a vast knowlage of the proper protocalls for powwow.
He was the best MC I have ever worked with.

Air Traffic Control....
An Emcee is like an Air Traffic Controller....(sp?) Need 2 keep things flowing or the planes will just pile up! Several Emcees are good at keeping the show rolling. Some have planes tumbling out of the sky..........

Your air traffic controller (atc) is more like the arena director. Yep you can call the AD that because he directs the blips on the radar screen or dancers in the circle. "Men traditional dancer 104 request denied to charge the drum. Proceed inline then turn left bearing 90 degrees when leaving the circle. Have a safe dance... Shawl dancer 255, dance left of center. You are on a collision course with grass dancer 657... Grass dancer 657 traffic on your right 6 feet fancy shawl dancer. Danger wake turbalance from flying shawl. report traffic then proceed when clear. " LOL

I just had to say that. Thanks for the addition of the "tiny tot turbo prop". You gotta watch them little ones. Sometimes they enter the airspace (arena) without a clearence. (they slip away from mom and dad and enter the circle). Coyot mentioned air traffic control and I just had to respond because I fly small aircraft for recreation and some business. You gotta admit that what I say is true. The arena director does control the circle. Sometimes it's a light day out there and there are few in the circle. On other days the arena director is pulling his hair out, leaving half cups of coffee at the east gate, and resolving more problems then you can shake a stick at.
