One thing that also gets on my nerves are rookie MCs that think they can take their time in getting to the arena. I like to have the MC and the AD ready at least an hour before the scheduled start of events. As a sound person, I get my system up and running a nhour ahead and it makes the events start on time if the MC and AD are present well ahead of schedule.
Some of dem pro guyz show up later than the rookies....but they can pull it off a lot easier. Grand entry's at 7:00 Friday night in Logan, UT....I'll take your advice and be there by 6:00.

They know who is a good person to welcome, they know all the Chiefs, Veterans, etc. It helps a lot when you are an MC in a place that isn't where you are from. Also, don't fall in love with the sound of your voice. When I was trained by an MC from the BC Interior, he told me nobody ever comes to listen to the MC, he is part of the atmosphere. If you start taking away from the singers and dancers, that turns people off. If you are going to tease people you better diss yourelf as well. If you can't laugh at yourself, then it sounds like you are trying to be mean. Here's a good one for you. My wife was acting up and I told her that I wasn't going to sleep with her that night, to punish her. Instead of getting all hurt she started whoooping it up. Wonder why when women say that to men it always works. Anyway, good luck with your MC job.
Right on...that's some real solid advice. Thanx for the reminderz. I think I'll print this thread and go over it before Friday night....I'll let you good people know how things go.

Yeah, start talking as soon as the sound system is up and running. This helps the sound man make all the necessary adjustments ahead of time. This is very important if there are co-MCs. The microphones for each MC needs to be tailored to the deepness or pitch of his/her voice. That way, he or she can use his own assigned mic throughout the entire event without having to readjust every time the mic is passed on to the other MC. The sound man also needs to have a mic available for specials and for people that want to say something during the powwow. The mic(s) for the MCs should be assigned only to them.

I recommend that you know your AD. You must rely on him and he needs to rely on you. You also need to know who your Committee go to is for that immidiate (?).

Speak Loudly but not yelling. Speak well. You may want to tape yourself to see where you want to say things a little differently. We all sound different to others than what we think we sound like.

Enjoy yourself and have fun with it. If you're nervous your voice will sound like it. Avoid the Likes, ands, uhs,& ayes etc, etc. Good luck, you'll do well.

Another thing that I learned from a very good local MC, now passed, is to keep a note book or note pad. Take notes, keep a schedule written etc. I found out that I can't remember everything until it's too late. If I keep notes I can keep my brain on track. Try to make your notes in sequence if you can. This should help keep things in order. You may not forget to announce something if you see it written, refer to your notes very often.

Lots of good advice...thanx again! Get'n nervous...I'll be jump'n in my truck around noon, travel'n down the road 4 hours and check'n into the motel. Then I'll show up early like around 5 or 6 to check everything out....meet the committee and become familiar with the good folks there at Utah State University. Wish me well!

sidejumper is an unknown quantity at this point
the business of MCing

You'll do just fine I'm sure. One other thing I do before a powwow starts is that I usually, take some sage or sweetgrass with me, I burn some and smudge myself with it and say a little prayer to myself and the almighty as well as the spirit of the Powwow, that I may not say or do anything to hurt some anyone intentionally. to guide my thoughts and actions. Its just something I do that i thought I'd share with you. Good luck and may the Creator smile upon you and keep you safe from harm.AHO!

One more thing ... spit out any gum that you might be chewing on before you bring the mic up to your mouth. Some microphones are very sensitive and it's very annoying to hear someone chewing gum over the sound system.

Also, don't cover up the microphone or put it behind your back when you have an on-off switch that you can use. The mic will pick up sound that you might not want the audience to hear.

In windy conditions, a foam microphone screen may be needed. Finally, use a slip ring or other object to keep the mic from rolling around when you need to place the mic down on the table (a good sound person will have all the necessary accessories to make sure you don't have to worry about such gadgets).
