Flying into powwow
If you have head staff (head dancer/drum group) flying into the powwow, what should the committee do? what have you seen done before?...and if the committee has a tight budget....what's the LEAST they should do.

Hello, we are currently doing this for the drum group we will bring to Alaska this next July. We were able to get Alaska Airlines to make a money donation, buy advertisement, and they will give a discount on airline tickets for our guest drum group. We are paying for the drum's tickets, but the discount will help alot. At the very least I would try and get them a very good price with an airline; using your UNIV. of Washington group identity would probably help you get one.

uw_:
I'm not sure what your question is? When I travel with our drum group to a powwow a great distance away, we fly in and our air transportation is paid for by the sponsoring organization (this has been a standard practice from powwow sponsors, including your student group at UW). We are normally picked up at the airport, fed, given a schedule and taken to our hotel. Is this what you're asking? Or, Are you asking what is additionally done to accommodate the people you fly in? (ie. ground transportation, hospitality, honorarium, etc.?) All this is covered in a contract between our lead singer and the sponsoring organization.

The easiest thing to do is send a car that will take them to their hotel. People often overlook limo service. Its reliable, quick and may not cost as much as you think. You can't send a minivan, because everyone and their luggage and drum won't fit in.
Universities also have contracts with airlines that allow them to purchase tickets for a set price (usually a good one) for any flights originating in and returning to the University's nearest airport. |

I would echo what has been mentioned. I would also say that as a minimum you could have several pickup the group or family and offer housing in home(s). I enjoy camping but if I had to fly I do enjoy staying with Friends and Family. I know our committee can't afford to fly anyone in, would matter since we have no big airports near by anyway. We'd have to go into KC MO Intl.

If you have a tight budget you should stick with drums in the area. Less travel expenses which could be put towards hotels. If a drum trys to bleed you, dont hire them.
If you are paying thousands for a drum make sure they are bring a full crew. The worst thing is spend thousands and 4 guys show up! |

Quote:
In the case of the U of Washington and some other universities, they get the names of 10 singers that will be flying to their powwows. All 10 singers have their airline tickets purchased in advanced, so there is no dispute on getting shortchanged by a drum. Universities have strict budget guidelines that have to be followed in order to receive university funding. Most universities that do this have made arrangements to have the drum group picked up and transported to and from the airport/hotel/powwow (and sometimes the extras places too) * L

If you have the budget to fly in your drum groups, then the least you should do is provide a ride from the airport to their hotel and then back and forth to the powwow.
Make sure whoever is assigned to taxi them around is reliable. |
