The modern powwow began with "mandances" called the Omaha (Grass) Dance of the Northern Plains and Helushka of the Southern Plains.
Both being warrior dances, women were originally not allowed in these mandance ceremonies. Now we are in a new era. Powwows evolve and change, some for the better, some for the worse. That being said.. . . What is your opinion on Women Emcees and Women Arena Directors? Be nice *L

I've only heard one woman MC and she was a rookie, sure sounded like it too :Chatter.
I haven't seen a women AD but I have seen a Whipwoman and they always do a good job taking care of the floor. Does that count??? :Chatter |

We had a woman Arena Director last year, and we're going to have her be one of the AD's this year as well.
And just like Kakeeya said, there are whipwoman, which isn't much different than an arena director in terms of the responsabilites they assume. There are woman arena directors and MC's here and there....there are going to be more in the future...so why fight it:D ...this is a good thing. |

uw_N8: The powwows in the Northwest have been more accepting of women in men's roles than other powwow areas. Since the 70's there has been more all women's drums and women singers at your powwows than on any other powwow circuit. I am not saying this is good or bad. If it works for you and the elders accept it, it becomes apart of your newly created traditions. I have yet to see a woman arena director or whipwoman, but I think it will be interesting when I do.

Kakeeya, I have been to a Satus Longhouse George Washington powwow and more recently to the Omak Longhouse for a powwow. I must have not been nice because. . . all the women arena directors left town *L (because I have been known to be naughty).

A real Whipwoman doesn't leave town because someone is too naughty, that's when she does her job and makes you straighten up! :31: :Chatter j/k :Chatter All kidding aside.... Whipwoman have the same responsibilities as the Whipmen, and some take care of the powwows and some take care of the Longhouse ceremonies or Waashut services. Two very different types and once in a while you'll find the ones that take care of both. At our LH powwow, we try to have a Whipman and a Whipwoman and they both take turns making the dancers come out and dance or other duties as required. At our services they make sure that everything goes according to our traditional ways and is done correctly. |

Still I didn't see any women whippers. *L Who knows? I was on my best behavior and they may have not required one.

No, the Shaker's are very different. I can't tell you much about them because I don't know much about them :Chatter other than the Shaker's have their own church but do come to the Longhouse for services when theres a funeral or if the deceased also believed that way. They also incorporate teachings from the Bible and they all wear white clothes. The Waashat is our religion that has been around since time immemorial. That is where we still practice the way our ancestor's prayed and praised the Creator. There have been changes though like the leader uses a bell (smaller than the Shaker's) and I know that is a recent change but before I was born....... many moons ago..... :Chatter I can't say much more because I don't want to get in trouble, might have a Whipman knocking on my door later.... :31: ayyyyy :Chatter |
