The first time I have ever seen a Chicken Dancer was at my annual this summer. He and his friend had on skintight dark blue and purple under their regalia. Most of my people looked at them like they were from another planet.
I also heard people making nasty comments about them under their breaths about the Chicken Dancers being homosexuals. I was ashamed of them for even saying that out loud. But you know how rude some folk can be.I thought those guys were Bug Dancers from the South West perhaps??? I mean they had like those antennae plumes on their roaches. And they had these really cool ornate small bustles and really cool gear/accesories. Their beadwork was ornate and beautiful. I saw them dance too out with the Grass Dancers. They were a sight to behold! Especially on our little ole Oneida Wisconsin Rez. I thought why not? Beatle or Ant or Scarab dancer? We are such a varied people and Turtle Island is so vast, who knows if there are Insect Dances or not? I mean no disrespect when I say "Bug Dancer". Although my words may be perceived as such. Especially by those who Chicken Dance, or Grass Dance... But when I went to Oklahoma last summer I saw Chicken Dancers down by ya'll and I asked if those men were Bug Dancers and I got laughed at sooo much! I was pretty embarrassed; but then I was told that they were called Chicken Dancers. And that it was a very old skool dance and a very sacred one at that. And that it originated up around Montana country. But when I said "Bug Dancer" to my Caddo/Comanche and Sioux/Comanche friends they laughed their asses off! And of course told me to tell all their family and cousins and friends about my first experience seeing a Chicken Dancer at the 06 Oneida PowWow. That's why I love our people so much! There are a myriad of dances and styles that vary from region to region. I'll stop now before I put my foot in my mouth. Of course thats if I haven't already have???

My most humblest apologies to all my Elders,Brothers and Sisters for posting this on the wrong Category/Thread. I failed to see the Chicken Dance thread just above this one.
Dang now I'm all really embarrassed.
