Bell Problems

I'm having a problem with my youngest son's bells (doesn't seem to happen to my older sons bells).
The bells seem to be cutting through the lacing, & breaking off. I can't figure out what is different between those of my older son & those of my younger son.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
thanks
Suzze

Sounds like the strip of metal on the back of the bells where you thread the lacing through has some sharp edges.

My choice for this would be to coat all the edges with several layers of clear finger nail polish - you could also pad them with thin pieces of tape (duct tape cut into narrow strips, clear packing tape, white first aid tape etc) but to me that would be a bit "fiddly" to do. Or you could try filing the edges smooth - again fiddly and maybe impossible depending on the size of the bells.

Tanks, I'm going to try the nail polish & filling, If I can file it.
As much as I love my duct tape, I agree that would be difficult

I use cotter pins (aka cotter keys or split pins) and washers (just on the back sode) too hold my bells on. They've been holding my brass bells for four years (although they have washers front and back - the front ones are in brass and I stamped them) and when I used the nickel ones - back then the bells always broke before the leather or pins did. The backs of my bells are also padded a bit for comfort.

Good luck there.

Got hold of some long twist ties over the holidays that are gold/brass colored - these would have definite possibilities for use with bells.
