GrassDance outfits
HI My name is Alan. And I'm a 15 year old GrassDancer Kentucky..Have been for 5 years now and soon to be six..Now I'm planning out a new outfit..And I'm so confused about a few things and was hoping you guys could help out..OK I've heard what you do to the front you have't to do to the back of your to..Is that true?..And instead of having 12in yard can you have 18in yarn?..And do ya know anyway to keep the roach from Flying off while dancing?..Mine will not stay on it always comes off...Good thing I just have fake feathers not the real one's in it..Canyall help with that please....

front and back dont have to match.
how do you put your roach on now? 2 ties, braid, headband? my opinion is that 18in is too long, you dont want to look like a carwash, that is a boy scout thing. and you dont want to get tied up in a knot. |

Make the fringe length whatever you feel comfortable with. Look at pictures of different outfits in the gallery. As for the roach, can't be much help there. Try using wide, flat shoelaces.

The people who posted here have given you some good advice...seems like the first good advice you've gotten so far.
There are no rules as to what you have to put on your shirt or aprons or anything. That is a load of bunk. Also, as to fringe length, I agree with Joe's Dad, just make it to fit you and your body type...I wouldn't have short aprons and really long fringe though...that might look weird...make it proportional. Most grass dancers tie on their roaches with shoelaces...one in the front, and one from the back coming around and under the neck. I've never heard of other dancers having the problems you're having. I feel it may be the slipperiness of the bandanna...loose the rag and try it.

If you're going to get somthing from Crazy Crow ty to get it as far ahead of time as possible - thier shipping is fast, but everything they sell smells like mothballs :P
It's good to have some time to air it all out. Quote:

I was just thinking about the first post.
"same thing on the front as the back" i think that is just misconstrued by the boy scout grass dance movement which teaches dancing the same moves with both sides of your body. |

Good luck on finding a cheap, ACTUAL roach, but there are fiber roaches which I hear look just like a real roach, and might even be a bit morw durable. Not seen one of these in person yet, so I can't give my personal opinion on them, but I wouldn't think they'd appear any different from the traditional roach. Actually, the fiber would probably be easier to work with than real porcupine. I'd check www.crazycrow.com and www.nocbay.com, one of them probably has one in stock for no more than $20.

Fiber roaches look terrible. Pass.
A cheaper alternative is a horse hair roach. But even those are difficult to make look good and they tend to droop more than porky hair. Richard Thunderdchild in Sask makes the nicest horsehair roaches I have ever seen. A good Porky roach will last a lifetime if you take care of it, well worth the investment. |
