Hi. I am making my boys new grass dance clothes and want to use fabric instead of yarn and or ribbon. It looks easy, but then again, I'm not sure how to go about it.
Do you just measure and rip the fabric in lengths? Do you finish the edges so it doesn't unravel or leave it alone (ala fraycheck)? Do you cut out strips or individual pieces? Does the fabric unravel when you wash it? Is anyone eating chinese for lunch today? I know, lots of questions, but I want to make sure it's done right. Except for the lunch question, I just threw that one in. So, if anyone out there has any tips or info, I would love to hear them. Thanks! Betty |

Yes
I'm having Chinese for lunch. Leftovers from yesterday, so I could have replied then.

Grass clothes.
Forgot about the fringes question. I have a rag set. Here's what I did. I took the material from which I wanted the fringe and cut strips (not like you're thinking) twice as wide as I wanted my fringe long. My fringe is about 10 inches so I cut strips of the material that was 20 inches wide and as long as the amount of material that I bought. Say I bought two yards of 60 inch wide material. I ended up with three pieces that were two yards long and 20 inches wide. With me so far? K. Then I folded each strip in half so it was 10 inches wide and 2 yards long. Ironed it to make it hold. The folded side I sewed to the clothes, leaving the loose edges out, makes a double row of fringe. After it was all sewn on, I took a scisors and snipped a cut every inch or so along the edges. Just snipped it, didn't actually cut the fringe, didn't want to take that much time, I'm lazy. Could use a roller cutter probably for cleaner lines. Then I went back and grabbed either side of the cut and ripped my fringe up to the point where it was sewn on. Ripping stretched the fabric and disfigured it, so it doesn't just lay flat, it's got some shape to it and a little fullness. Did I manage to make any sense?
d Oh, raw edges raw. Ripping makes fuzz and strings. Can cut off the excess. But I don't really care. Hand wash line, line dry all my stuff so don't get much trouble from that.

If'n ever
If'n you've ever tied a yarn set, you'll LOVE doing this. 1000 times faster and easier.
