Not A Stupid Question

When you say "on beat or off beat" it can create some confussion. A very long time ago there was a rather heated debated about on and off beat singing and dancing.

I think that we need to clarify how you are using the terms.

Do you mean problems finding the rhythm and being or dancing "off beat" meaning not in rhythm?

Or

Do you mean finding the rhythm and accenting the weaker beats and dancing to the "off beats?"

We must remember that the term "off beat" can either refer to one that can't find the rhythm or it can refer to one that simply accents the weaker beats.

For Example: Let's say a Powwow song has the feel of 4. Instead of accenting the stong beats of 1 & 3, a person accents the weaker beats of 2 & 4. They are still very much with the beat and in rhythm but they are dancing with the "off beats."

Dancing to the "off beats" is done all time, it is simply known as syncopation. Now dancing "off beat" is one that can't find the rhythm at all and can be seen putting the accents on any beat including the "and beats."

hahaha, I guess it would depend on the song that I get, sometime we get a drum that sings the song off from the drum beat... or their down beat is off.
