Chicken Dancer.....Specialty vs. Category...???
Figured that I would post this here, since every other Chicken dancer questions or concerns ends up here.....
But this is just by opinions...cause everyone's differ...But which do you think that the Chicken Dancer is more of a specialty dance such as a hoop dancer, or should it be more of a category dance at powwows...?Just curious to see everyone's opinion..... |

darkwater, If the chicken dance is part of the culture and is going to take place where there is a long standing tradition/society, it should be included as a regular category. If it takes place elsewhere and is danced by people who have adopted it, I would suggest it be danced as a special category. This is just an opinion. Anybody else?

i would have to agree with you on that one ^^
but then again you will run into the argument as which tribes have as a long standing tradition/society or who adopted it. sooo let the but i would summize to say that say that a pw in say florida would probably go for a special category and say a pw in alberta/sask would probably go for a regular category (and many do). and alot of the bigger pow wows all over the country are bringing out the prairie chicken dance as a regular category...

I Have Seen It As A Special And A Dance Catagory, At The Same Powwow. So To Me Personally, I Would Have To Agree With The One Before My Post. In Canada It Would Be A Catagory Bu Tin The Warmer States A Specail. May Be Because They Don't Get To See It As Often As The Norhtern People Do.

Regular and Special
I would have to agree with most of the posts here about this being a reg cat at most pow-wows North of the border. There are specials in this catogory as well but that is for something specific.
I was at a Pow-wow that was a one-dayer where the whole thing was just to honour one dancer and he was a Chicken Dancer. There were more Chickens there then any other category combined it seemed like. ohhh i am so funny!

Whala, The Prairie Chicken Dance is part of the Blackfoot Culture. A dance similar to it (The Round Bustle Dance) is a part of the culture where you reside.

Here in North Dakota where i reside, it is more of a category than a specialty., and also in Canada it is a category also, in most places.
My son is chicken dancer and good at it. I think the chicken dance originated in Canada because the still have the chicken dance society up there.
