My first time of putting one together I used and pattern and it sucked. So I went and pieced a shirt together along with the front and back aprons and side tabs, as for the pants I used a pair of dr. or nurse scrub pants without the elastic at the bottom. As simple as that(.) If you use ribbon, have fun, it takes alot more ribbon to get that full effect like yarn and it weighs twice as much if not more. Some people mix and match some don't, its up to what your likes are.

I would have to agree with the scrub pattern for the pants. When I did my nephews outfit I just used a basic pant pattern. I've used both ribbon and yarn I really don't have a preference. I do have a question. I want to make something special for my brother to hold when he grass dances. My boys dance crow style and traditional. I've only made dance sticks so I don't really know how to make the grass hoop. So if anyone can give me their opinion. Does the sweetgrass become brittle and break when it gets dry or does it hold up well. what would be another option?

yea a pattern for a "scrubs" set works well - roomy and comfortable.
for the aprons/side drops - measure twice/cut once!! use old newspaper as a paper pattern. better to cut paper than waste your material. remember to keep the paper pattern though - that way when you make the next one - you can make any necessary changes to it. measure the "indended" - waist, hip to length of desired length of apron, etc. ... remember not to stretch the yarn when you are cutting it - it'll shrink back and be shorter than you intended or uneven. sweetgrass does get dried out - but you can "change it out" when that happens. or you can make a "shorter" dance stick. some grass dancers don't carry anything in their hands ...
