Hey, whaddup, Kiwehnzii!! Good to see you again!! :)
Well, Jammer, I ain't hatin on you. I just don't think a little white boy such as yourself should be challenging people who are obviously Native and know what the hell they're talking about. You've been that way since you came here and you've gotten called on it before. When are you gonna get it?? That whooshing sound you hear so often..? That's points going over your head. :p And you seem to be the only one talking trash on this forum cuz that's all you got, puppy. |

Right on, Huck!! :p
I learned a story about the mirror boards from someone who was dancing chicken before dancing chicken was cool. And it makes a lot more sense than some speculations here. However, like I stated before, I don't put this stuff on the Internet so wannabes like some people (aaahhJammerchooo) can take it and do a Boy Scout workshop on it next week and then proceed to go around telling people they're "more Native than Natives". And quit trying to deflect the issue yourself, Jammer. You got nuthin. You're a white boy. Just admit it and I'll have a lot more respect for you in the morning.

nda’oliihi nlii anabidlaahi nlt, eego shi'teke , Was up skinz,s ,,Geez comin up on this really late but hope this helps, The mirror board from my understanding and research and use is used in the Chicken dance for courtship, for instance when ya wanna snag that Native Honey you shine the light in her eyes to let her know that you are interested, or as the joke saying is ( your just too vain) LOL.
Nlt,eego , Be well, Ken blue bird.

I am not sure about the mirror boards, but I was told by an elder that mirrors were used for many things. to reflect evil or negativity, in battle to signal other warriors or to blind the enemy. I like the story of the chicken dance I haven't heard that one. My son dances grass and uses a fan and a medicine wheel but he loves chicken dancing and I may make him a mirror board for that.

nishnaabe-chigeyaang
Ahaw *pitches in his two cents*
How I understand the mirror board is two ways. The one way is like how that old man from Pounmaker says, that it's to capture the shiggen's spirit. My own additional thought on that is that since that dance is all about the shiggen's courtin' ways, what better place to preen for your mate than in front of a mirror. ;) Second, that mirror reflects a light. Most light comes from a source that is warm or generates heat - and heat is related to the south and love/compassion (gi-ZHAA-te, ZHAA-wano, ZHAA-wenimaa) So I'm thinking, since being a dancer is partially about making other people feel good, and heat and light are associated with compassion and love... maybe that mirror board isn't so much about deflecting bad things as it is about refelcting the good things that are inside of the person carrying it - such as the love that individual has for the people. This is how I think about that mirrorboard and my dancing today. miigwech mii awe |

Ok,toto; I am not in Oklahoma anymore...I don't know what a dang chicken dancer is...I thought this was a joke.( No kidding I don't pay any attention to grass dancers.. we call em Wal Mart dancers down here.)
So someone tell me (without a big *amn fight).Please...... Mirror boards are an old old part of straight dance clothes, we have had em generations...Go back to Hethushka and Omaha dances...There are pictures of dancers 100 years ago with them and many old ones in our museums. I have my grandads hanging on the wall. Some people on here have a good idea about what they mean to us down here, and some are ...well goofy.... I won't tell which...
