But you said he uses the whole porcupine, just before that you say the deer tail base and porky hair.
Sit back and grab a cola and I will tell you of the first choctaw grass dancer. A long time ago when powwows where popping up all over the place a young choctaw man, ventured into the wild unknown. The NORTH. (que scary music) As he walked along his way he found a powwow. (Dum Dum DUUUUUM) He recognized the sound of the drum but the words were wrong, and the people danced funny like they were falling over. They had grass tucked into their belts and some were holding grass above them. Our hero figured the grass tucked into the belt must have itched so he was reluctant to try it. The dancers invited him over to learn this new dance he said sure but he first must find some realy good grass. (you know how dancers are gotta have the best) Before he had gotten completely away the dancers told him to grab a porcupine and put it on his head. Now while our hero was searching for a porcupine and trying to figure out how not to get some "neccesary equipment" itchy he found some white cloth. Then it hit him he rubbed it in the grass to make it green and tucked it into his belt. YAY no itch! He found a porcupine and stuck it on his head (not without sticking himself several times mind you) He heard the drums and went running towards the grand entry line and got some cotton stuck on his porcupine. When he got in line Guees who he saw. That's right Wapescha. Our Choctaw hero entered into the contest, He was given contest number 49, but thats a whole other story. During the contest it began to sprinkle. The water washed away the grass stains revealing the cut up white cloth tucked into the belt. Our hero was embaressed, but Wapescha loved the idea he imeaditly tore up his blanket and tucked it into his belt. And so began the white yarn and ribbon fringe on grass dancers. Our Hero won first place and went back home a hero only to find that his whole tribe was moved due to the indian removal act of 1830. Also another story. |

Ooh of course it's the waving prarie grass, and the white yarn represented the purifiacation of the dance circle.
For real though, I made it up. And yours doesn't seem to have much truth in it either. C'mon the roach was around long before competion powwows. Anybody know if maybe it's like a chiken dancer's feathers? They look simaler maybe a grass dancer forgot his feathers and put those in? If he won well people imitate champions. This is just a suggestion I bet people realy don't know. I'm sure somebody out there could give you a vague area of origin and time, but they haven't answered yet. And steve we should write a book of these great stories and sell it, we'd make a fortune. Make a lot of people mad in the process but it seems everyones getting rich off of native culture but, the people who should be. Call me we'll get an agent, we'll be bigger than Harry potter. |

I know what they are for
These guys are just playing Barney.
We all know those antenna scopes are really "snaggen scanners" they let out electric signals down thru the guys brain; when a potential snag :serenade: comes within a certain feet they get hit with a bolt of electricity! Isn't that right boys? :devil :31:

New antenna hypothesis
___________
Or . . . Pehaps a tipi creeper was out one night, doin' his usual rounds in a quiet and unscathed ndn camp. Only this time he wound up with the "buckskin baby doll" of his dreams. When he woke up . . . the camp had moved and all he had to show for his benevolent one night stand were . . . bed bug bites. Yup, that's right! Bed bug bites. All over his neck! 'even had his name spelled out, in ndn, for all to see! (She had talent). ;) Well, he wasn't proud. So in honor of his glorious conquest (or was it "buckskn baby doll's" worse nightmare.) I forget. Anyway, I'm getting off the jixt of the story. Well anyways. This tipi creeper put some antennas he found from an old discarted television laser disk - on his head - In honor of the "bed bug" that did all the damage on his neck! Well . . . it could'a happened? |

Three pages of posts and no real answers or anything important said. Congratulations to all who have posted.:1Party:
We should start a thread for these great "origin stories" Only interesting made up stories. I think it would get pretty interesting. Last edited by Tx_grass_dancer; 07-31-2003 at 07:52 PM. |
