There are many storys about its origins.

But to the Kiowas, the songs came from the Red Wolf, and he taught a young man about the songs and the dance. The Kiowas had a society called the Tom-Pa-ga(spelling, not sure). Like many other dances it died out due to the goverment control, and or not enough funding. But in the 60's or seventy's it was restarted and it spread like wild fire across Oklahoma. Now you will only have dances with Gourd dancing only. Theres alittle, there is much more out there. I hope I do not offend. If any one has any complaints pm me and I will respond.........TMS
Sun Dance and Brush Dance and Gourd Dance are all 3 seperate dances
Tiah-Peah-Go is the society
went dormant in 1930s revived 1956

__

Rides the Wind,

The Brush Dance and Gourd Dance are two segments preceeding the now extinct Kiowa Sun Dance.

*ahem*

OKAY- Gather Round Chitlins, Kiowa Comin' Through! ;)
The Gourd Dance Was Given To The Kiowa People By A Red Wolf. Not The Man "Red Wolf" Specifically, Though The Name "Red Wolf" Is A Tribal Name Still Used Today. (Most Recognizably By Old Man Cozad) It Was An Actual Red Wolf.
The Story Goes That Some Warriors Were On Their Way Home From Battle And Heard Someone Singing. So They Crawled Up A Hill And Saw A Red Wolf Dancing And Singing At The Bottom Of The Hill, Shaking A Medicine Rattle. He Told Them "I See You Watching Me. I Will Give You This Dance To Take Back To Your People." (Grandmama Ida Kaubin Told Us All That The Wolf Spoke Kiowa, So Its Iron-Clad That The Dance Was Given To The Kiowas *L*) He Told Them Also, That Since They Were Warriors Returning, To Keep It Sacred As A Veteran's Dance. Also, To Remember That HE Was The One To Give It To The Kiowas. Hence The Low "Ohhh" Sound Or War Cries At The End Of Every Song To Pay Homage To The Wolf's Howl.
The Gourd Dance Society Is Called "Tiah-Piah-Ga" Or Roughly "Ty-pay-gaw". It Is A Society All Its Own, And In Kiowa Way It Is Below Two Other Societies. The Highest Is "Koy-Sayn-Gaw", A Group Of Warriors That Would Pierce Themselves And Stob Themselves To The Ground To Show That They Would NEVER Run Away. The Next Is Tohn-Con-Gaw, Or "Black Leggings" Society, And Finally "Tiah Piah Gah". Brush Dance, Scalp Dance And Traditional Sundance Are All Seperate, Though Gourd Dancing Took The Place Of The Traditional Sundance When It Was Outlawed.
I Think They Said It Best This Year At Carnegie... If You Are Inducted ANYWHERE Else But In Carnegie Park In Oklahoma, Its Not Official. There Are Many Other Societies Of Gourd Dance, But Outside Of Carnegie Park Done By The Society Members, It Is Not Official....
Ah-Ho ;)
