Gourd Dancing in the SouthEast

I am originally from Okla but my job has taken me to Ga.
I love to Gourd Dance, but am having a hard time finding Powwows in this area that have Gourd Dancing
I attended a Powwow In Concord NC in early August
And it was awesome!
I met some Members from the White Star Gourd Society
we had a great time and danced 4 full rounds!!

So I have been looking for other Powwows in a 200 mile Radius from Augusta Ga that have Gourd Dancing or even know what it is...
Any Help out there????

gourd dance

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself at Liske dance.
There is one in June called AICA and White Star is usually
there for it. In May in Augusta there is a dance with
Billy Horse as head singer. White Star is also back for
the seminar in January. The people that out on AICA,Liske
and the seminar are mostly Hethushka members or closely
involved with Oklahoma. Hope you can find this helpful.

Josiah,

I went to a powwow in Athens, awhile back. It had afternoon gourd dancing sessions. Does anybody know if they still have this dance? It was near a pond.

Hey, just wanted to let you know that most of the powwows in Louisiana have gourd dancing. Theres a bunch of small dances, but even at the larger ones too. Heres a list with some dates for ya

Third weekend in may: Tunica Biloxi Powwow in Marksville

Third weekend in April and last weekend of November: LIHA in Roberts

The saturday of Labor day weekend: Cannes Brulee in Kenner

First weekend in October: Coushatta Powwow in Kinder

OCt 29th- LSU Powwow in Baton Rouge

There are a lot more, I just cant think of any more off the top of my head. Also the Alabama Coushattas in Livingston Texas put a few powwows on a year and all have gourd dancing. their annual powwow is the first weekend of June, then they have a youth powwow the last weekend of november as well. Hope this helps

Hey Bad,

I was the head dancer a while back, when LIHA used to have their powwow at the Tchefuncte Campground. (I missed the turn and I was Tchefunked up)!!!! *L There was a southern drum there. I can't remember if they had gourd dance though. How long has LIHA been at their new site?

Also does Shreveport still have a contest powwow? Gourd dance?

LIHA has been at this new place for quite some time now. I think maybe the mid-nineties. anywho, yeah there are a couple powwows in the shreveport area. One is the twin eagles powwow (or sumthin like that) its like the second weekend in september. Then a new organization, started having one in Bossier City last year. kind of a messed up powwow too, but i think the twin eagles is pretty good...never been to it though. Both of em have gourd dancing.

Bad,

That's it. The Twin Eagles Powwow. I was head dancer there too. I brought a whole crew with me to dance. When the dance was over each night we all went over to the Isle of Capri Casino .... ahem,... to eat. *L

I want to Thank all of you that have replied, I also recieved some email that said that the Augusta Powwow in May also has Gourd Dancing and the besides the other Powwows that have been mentioned that was pretty much it for this area.
I guess I will just have to practice in the living room till some of the Powwows come round next year.
I will be headed back to Oklahoma in the spring for some visiting and plan on hitting a few while I am there.

ehh...
