Cool Gourd Dance Singing

When comparing Oklahoma gourd dance with that of inter-tribal gourd dances, there seems to be quite a difference on how things are done. The lastest quiery I heard from a Illinois drum was that gourd dance songs have a specific number times the verses are sung--six push-ups. Tell me what you all think on this?

That's a bunch of hooey. You sing a song through at least 4 "push ups." Three gets you strange looks. Six or more for no good reason will get you looks too, usually from the guy to your left who is itching to sing a song.

You're right to notice a difference in the way gourd dancing (and singing) is done in Oklahoma versus everywhere else. My bet is always on OK.

SoMenom,

To quote a popular commercial on cable TV. . .

"What goes on in Las Vegas, stays in Las Vegas."

Thanks for the advice, but...

Can you help clarify my gourd dance understanding. I've been reading other posts you have done and would really appreciate your insight on gourd dance songs/singing. I posted my question in good faith...I have friends in Illinois who ask me Gourd dance questions, and I feel the answers should come from knowledgable people..I 'm still learning...

SoMenom:

I just had a great conversation yesterday, about how the gourd dance changes, the farther you get away from southwestern Oklahoma.

"There is NO standardized specific number of times the verses are sung in a gourd dance song."

I'll rephrase my former post to fit your needs...

"What goes on in Illinois, should stay in Illinois."

Any information that comes out of this state (IL) should be checked with at least 12 other sources before being believed....

Just curious if you want to share who this drum was that you got this info from.....
