So, if he can get everyone to stop dancing when the sun goes down, he won't have to feel awkward at not switching his blanket? hehe

Well . . . .
Actually, I've spoken with a number of Kiowa elders (in Oklahoma, not California or Massachusetts or wherever) who told me that gourd dancing should be wrapped up before dark.
Now, these conversations were at dances where we kept dancing (and singing) until around 10 p.m. or so, but that's what they told me. I suspect that it relates to traditions that go wayyyyy back that obviously aren't followed anymore (if you get my drift). - P |

I wouldn't have danced after dark either before electicity and lights came about. But yeah, thats what I've always understood. But then again alot of things are different. The Brush Dance was done early in the morning back then too. But I don't know if you'll be able to round up any singers that early after the "9" these days.

Its True~~Kiowa Gourd Dancing Ended at Dark!
Its True Yes, I have heard of this and even witnessed it at Carnegie Park back in the day. This gourd dancing was supposed to end before it got dark and it did. But now with so much time spent having more and more and longer and longer give-aways the gourd dancing today doesnt end until 10 or 11 pm.
One other main point I forgot to mention was that the Kiowa Gourd Clan dance was performed a week or few days prior to the Kiowa Sundance. The Kiowa Gourd Clan was a warrior society that helped with the sundance preparations and help police the camp. So...it would make sense that the Kiowa Gourd Clan Society would not be doing any dancing once the sun went down because of its affiliation with the Kiowa Sundance.
