Gourd Dancers: question?

For those of you who gourd dance. . .

What is inside your gourds? Rocks, beads, sand, don't know because you didn't make your own gourd?

Started off as kernel sized pebbles.

But, it's fine grained sand now...hehe

It'll just be powder before long.

Guess I'm up for a new rattle. :)

My gourds have small garnets and too I'm sure they are becoming sand size. MY can rattle is a more sand size garnets. I do have 2 gourds that have popcorn in them. These are my personal rattles for other events. I have used 1 of the these with popcorn in them in a gourd dance, it was the only one I had at that time. It did sound good, though during the Gourd dance.

I use glass beads, about size 11/o (cuz I save the 13/os for my beadwork!). They give me a good << shook shook >> sound without being too loud or too quiet.

I've heard about those little red rocks, but I try to avoid ant piles. . . . lol.

Man, I'd be afraid of the popcorn popping out here in the Oklahoma sun. (July gets pretty warm)
Can you imagine the looks you'd get if your gourd can started popping popcorn? LOL...
Thanks Cherosage,
Numunu

Hey there new daddy, Numunu. Thanks, that would be good, just think of it as a mid dance snack.

My brother uses small river rocks or pebbles. He gets them from some family land. The rocks are smooth so they don't cut up the inside of his gourds. They have a really good sound.

I can just see Bob eating his popcorn during a gourd dance break. LOL

Thats what I was told too.

So I braved the ant bed and stole the largest of their rocks and stuck them in my gourd. Then I shook it and it sounded like salt (inside my salt shaker).

No way.

So I poured out the stolen ant rocks back on their bed.

Then I traded a kid I know for some of his small plastic beads. I loaded a handful into my gourd until I heard a pleasing sound!

eehh haw! perfection!

hey there Ogapahndn: can you imagine one of those hot Quapah 4th of July dances. Dancing hot enough to make the gourd pop the corn.

As I have previously said I do have garnets in a gourd and sand sized garnets in a can shaker. All of these were given to me. I was told that the garnets were the right thing to use in the gourds. Not sure what would have been used if the garnets weren't available.

Hey Bob, bring your gourd next year and we'll see if the 4th heat is enough to pop it. I'll bring the butter and salt! LOL

I remember many a years hot enough the corn could pop in the gourd. Don't let the BIA Police know if you have any refreshing beverages.

We do have a great dance down in the valley, enhanced by all the great friends and family.

I just finished up on a new gourd and was trying to find that "right sound". I remembered reading this post about a year ago. I tried some bigger beads I had laying around, and like you said WhoMe, I got a pleasing sound. Funny thing is, we went to a dance this past weekend in Cache, and my bro wanted to borrow one of my gourds, I said take your pick, and he picked them up one at a time, shook em....and picked that new gourd out of the bunch...LOL....
