Much Respect here....
Grand Entries scheduled to start at 1 PM and & 7 PM should be allowed to start as scheduled...cause well it sure seems the Gourd Dancing 'nation wide' takes too long and goes well over their allotted time...sorry but well...pow-wows are pow-wows and each one is different, but waiting an Extra Hour is too long, how can it be prevented? |

Gourd dancing isn't for spectators. It's something that is enjoyable based on the depth of experience and participation.
The best analogy that I can come up with is to golf. I don't play golf, and I can't stand to watch it. However, if I played golf, I would probably get something out of watching it and may even enjoy it. With gourd dance, if someone has a familiarity with it, can sing along to singers with the knowledge and emotion, and even get out and dance to a song or two, get that goot feeling, it can be a quite a moving experience--definitely more moving to me than golf, anyway. Raw kidneys, bote and frybread--breakfast of champions! T.O.

My only advice would be to enjoy the spare time with your family. Take this time to reconnect with your loved ones. The gourd dance will not bow to any misgivings. It's best to relax and straighten your regalia and give thanks for being alive.

All I can say about this subject is:
For just a One Hour time filler at a contest dance- WHY BOTHER. It's my opinion that the Gourd Dance doesn't even belong at dances of that nature. Those are the exact people that will never have any understanding of it. If you want to Gourd Dance, then let's do it right. None of this one hour stuff twice daily before a Grand Entry. And none of this two songs and then a half-hour break crap. Jumpingbuffulo would have a fit at Carnegie on those nights when we Gourd Dance till 10 or 11 pm and then maybe War Dance for an hour.

Not against contest pow-wows. I know folks love 'em. I prefer the open, free dances we have down south here. The veterans society in Dallas put on a monthly dance for a few years, and although we didn't make any money, we did pay the bills and were able to donate to veterans charities. Paying to attend a dance to watch folks pin numbers on and perform for prizes. Okay. Paying to attend a gourd dance. No way. The two should not be mixed.

ok cool, well yeah I understand all this.
Was getting at when they are mixed gourd/contest and the schedule says Grand Entry at 7pm, the Gourd Dance Singers don't intentionally or purposely go over their allotted time, right? You're right about the type of pow-wows, I've been living down here on the Navajo/Dine' Rez and well powwows aren't the same as the Northern Plains here. Ok well yeah we're all here to have a good time, thx. Last edited by jumpingbuffalo; 07-03-2004 at 04:16 PM. |
