How did you get into gourd dancing?
I was wondering how long everyone has been gourd dancing or how did you become interested in it? I enjoy singing gourd dance myself.

Can't say I actually remember the first time.
I been running around with Kiowa's for...gawd...seems like forever. Gourd dancing just seemed natural...wonder why...LOL! If we weren't out there dancing because a friend or family member was being honored, we were singing for a gourd dance at a little community dance.
Oh yeah...I just love to sing those songs myself. Just something about them. They are my favorite songs.

I was invited the year after I went to basic training. I was at the home dance and Grandma and Grandpa Sloan introduced me and he gave me my first Gourd. Then when I was stationed at Ft. Sill OK, as are all good GUNNERS, I met many good people in and around the area. My Uncle and cuz's introduced me to several of these families. I was alowed to dance in some of these Gourd dances as well as Some of the Black Moc. dances. I felt very honored since I wasn't from that part of the world. In mid-1980's I was asked by Willard Dixon and Grandad(Jack Greenback) to dance with the Quapaw Intertribal Gourd Dance Society that was just started. I have have been a part of this organization ever since.
Very abreviated but still the short of things.

I guess my interest came from that. My childhood, going all around with them. As I got older, I got away from powwows, got busy with life. Then I realized I was missing out. So, I got back to the arena, and now, if there is a powwow with some gourd dancing, I am There! Goot thread Taco!

Good Thread to Start up again
I was browsing the old gourd threads and ran across this one
Thought it would be a good one to bring back I always saw Gourd dancing at powwows as a kid and just was drawn to it When my mother married a Cheyenne man when i was a teenager he brought me in to the dance I went into the Navy and danced a few times while on leave but I was away from it for a long time But I moved back to Oklahoma and now dance almost every weekend somewhere in the State I was brought into the Kiowa Tia-Piah and dance at our annual every year now!

The dance is in the heart. Gourd dancers have a special feeling every time they step into the circle. The drum reunites us with those who have gone on to their reward, some we fought with and never knew their names, Some dads and brothers we honor in our hearts. It is an honor and privilge to gourd dance. I have prayed, laughed and cried to that wonderful drum. I dance for those who cannot. That, I think, is the spirit of the gourd dance.
