White waist wraps

I have been looking at photos of gourd dancers from the early 1900's.

In these photos, none were wearing the familiar red and blue blankets that are the trademark of gourd dancers today. Also, missing were the cowboy boots and ball caps (just had to throw that one in . . . *LOL)!

In these photos there were no sash waist wrap-arounds (beaded and fringed) like you see every gourd dancer wearing today. Instead the dancers wore the familiar black shawl and a "WHITE WAIST WRAP" that overlaps and hangs off the side of the dancers. I have heard these types of wrap arounds were made of bed sheets.

Many gourd dance leaders and elders still wear these white wrap arounds when they gourd dance (among the Kiowa, Comanche and Cheyenne-Arapaho).

Any comment?

I have also seen these worn. I was told that this was a summer version that was worn in warmer weather. The ones I saw were made out of old bed sheets and I was told that these were cooler than the sashes. I don't know if that was true or not, but that was the explaination I recieved. Would love to hear what others have heard.
