Taliban Gourd Society?

I think we all know where the best gourd dances are. As for the weirdest I have saw was just once gourd dancer a few weeks ago down in Texas. He had on a huge red turban with some kind of huge feather hanging out of it. I thought it was the Taliban Gourd Society.

Bque:

I think if most tribes danced in the historically accurate regalia of their tribe, a lot of eyebrows would be raised.

The Five Civilized tribes wore the turban you are describing. Many of the man dance/straight dancing tribes (ie. Pawnee, Kanza, Iowa, Otoe-Missouria) also traditionally wore finger woven turbans.

Today, when one of them is brave enough to wear their historically accurate clothing during a powwow, someone is bound to say, "DAAAAAAAAAANG, Check it out!"

___

Along the same lines . . .

Even in Oklahoma, there are some strange "individual interpretations" of gourd dancing. Styles that make you go, "hmmmmmm?"

The Mesquakie's still wear traditional dress when they dance.....bear claw necklaces, large fingerwoven belts....that when worn....have the fringe hanging down behind them....sorta like Osage ladies belts. They still wear turbans....sometimes with roaches as in the old days.

....some still carry head and tail fans.

I think it's keen!!

GO MESQUAKIES!!!

...course, I don't think they Gourd danced??? But, ya never know, they got around....as did alot of their clothes.

I can clearly say this guy wasn't tribal at all. Tried to copy Kiowa Leggins and I think he bought his mocs from Tandy Leather Co. I know the differences between different tribal dress. I know some tribes wear the turbans and have seen them. This guy was none of them.

At this same place, I saw them have a blanket dance for the Head Gourd Dancer. They spread the blanket, threw money on it, then formed a circle around the blanket and danced around it.

This was down around Killeen. The singing was awesome. I know that cause I had to go out and sing the gourd dance for them. No one else knew any gourd dance songs. There was a couple of guys there trying to sing when i got there. They would pass around a tape recorder and each get one song before each set. Finally they just made me sing it all.
