there is a lotta of truth to what BQUETON is saying and i do agree to what he says, out here in oklahoma when a female goes to the drum you here singin. and then if your goin to sing you bring a chair and sit.

boy bacvk when aunt M.A. was around it was vary rare that you found a woman walk to the drum and sing with out bringin a chair. in the past when M.A. was at the Gatherin of nations she would scold women who came to drum with out chairs.

it is taught to be a singer it is a hard path to follow cause you gotta know songs and be able to sing the rights ones and sing them right.

Dang this is an old thread. Anyways. . . here is a point of clarification.

The women in question behind the drum were not singing. They were there to be seen and check out what it was like to be in the middle of a large gourd dance. The women in question made no attempts to sing and weren't there to honor anyone.

someone mentioned that during the GON gourd dance, Cozads didn't sing or hit drum for a few songs, yet were the the drum? If so why is that? too keen, too cool, others were off, I would like to know. I seen where if more than one drum being used it does make it hard to keep things in time.

Looking at this website there were tons of gourd dancers.
