'Siyo!

'Siyo!

My name is Samuel and I am new to this site. I wanted to introduce myself and say that I'm glad to be here. I'm a singer (No and So) and have been active in powwwows across the country for about 14 years now. I currently live in No. California, but I was born and rasied in Missouri. I am Tsalaghi and Siksika and am learning Tsalaghi and Lakota language.

I had a question about Gourd Dancing, but I wanted to introduce myself first.

Wado!

A question about Gourd Dancing

'Siyo!

I had a question and I wondered if I could get some opinions on this. I was a gourd dancer in MO but my gourd dance regalia (along with my feathers and regular dance regalia) got stolen when my house was robbed. Now that I live in CA and have spent a couple of years establishing myself as a powwow singer and trying to make a good name for myself, I want to get back into Gourd Dancing. However, I don't know about the Gourd Dance societies out here or who to approach. To make my situation a little bit tougher, I'm 2-Spirit...

My question? How to approach Gourd Dancing out here; I find it difficult to approach Elders who are in the know and I'm not sure how to go about getting back into dancing. What Gourd Dance socieites exist in the Bay Area? Also, with more and more 2-Spirit folks coming out of the woodwork, how should we address gender fluidity in regard to gender-specific dances? I was always taught to respect tradition, as well as other folks opinions, but also enforced with the belief that 2-Spirit folks are "special" and some of the "written in stone rules" don't always apply. There are many examples of this in NDN history-how can this history of accecptance (in general-I know there are some folks who will never accecpt me or my ways) be extended to this time?

I appreicate your opinions, weather I agree with them or not! I don't mean to offend or upset anyone.

Respectfully... Wado!

S

I'm no expert, but I would think that since you were already introduced you should be able to dance anywhere.

Put another outfit together, smoke it off, and use it. You may want to talk to your people back here in Mo. explain your problem, they may be willing to assist you again. KeDaDa.

Turkey season is weak this year though I did get mine. The weather is cool and wet. We should be glad to have this weather now because we will have some very hot dry weather soon enough. If you have the oppertunity to come back home in July try to go to Quapaw on the 4th and up here in Sedalia,MO on July 16-18.

On Sat. here in Sedalia we have a Gourd session from about 1:00-4:00 pm.
