Where to get the best Tipi

I have been looking for a tipi for a long time. When I have what I think is enough money, something comes up that I need it for, or I cannot find one. When I am broke I see several sites online.

So far Reese's Tipis look to be the best. To my untrained eye that is.
Also where do you get poles from when you live so far from the source? (not that I could tell a lodge pole pine from a cherry tree)
You can order them with a Reese's Tipi but they seem expensive.

Also...no where in my reading of Tipi life have i seen mention of a place for waste. My wife really wants to know about that :-)

Any Tipi tips or just teachings will be appreciated.

Reliable Tents & Tipi
120 North 18th Street
Billings, MT 59101

they have a good sale going on now through 1 April.

I've just purchased a 14' from them. It's Crow style.

On liners I've found going to Office Depot they have
a 6' X 9' painter drop cloth made of canvas. I use four
in my 16' tipi & about 1/4 cost of ordering liner.

I came across this tipi seller.

http://www.tipi.com/

I think the poles and shipping prices are rather reasonable compared to some out to gouge.

http://www.whisperingwind.com/ - there is a tipi link to a page that has a list of tipi manufacturers.

Well, I can't vouch for quality or anything, but there's info that might be useful.

Carefull with the best deal, it is not necessarly the best tipi deal.
There are many cheap tipi makers out there, but not with the best re-enforcements, stitching, material, and the little extras that make a GOOD tipi.

If you want cheap.....go for untreated canvas, no re-enforceced flaps-lacing pin holes, door area, etc and light weight material. Also look at how many stitches per inch they are using. Just a few things to think about.
If you are going to put your money into a tipi that will withstand the elements and last a long time.....put some money into it.

What about making your own tipi?
Yeah, I got the book, and can get adventurous at times.
But I think the type of sewing machine needed would make it out of the question.
I'm pretty sure my Simplicity model would never forgive me, but I got this neighbor...hmmmm

I got the Laubin book, "The Indian Tipi"....good stuff!

Thumbs up

You can use a regular home sewing machine, but it will strip the gears after a time.

I have offered to open my shop up and people can camp in my back yard and make their own tipi using thier materials. I own a large two needle industrial machine and have made over 300 tipis. It could be done in a few days with about 2 or 3 people. You would have your own complete tipi. You would also be able to make another with the skills that you learn.

NotSoLarj,

Try this place:

http://www.tipi.com/

My dad bought a tipi from them and it's really nice. Comes with a liner and door, and you can select the type and weight of material it's made out of. They also sell accessories and have NICE poles available for sale. And they're in Bend, Oregon, so it's a little closer to you!

I'm not sure where at in Northern California you are located. But is you are anywhere near Klamath Falls, you may want to consider cutting your own poles on the Winema National Forest. There are many designated wood cutting areas that contain lodge pole pine. Me and my family have cut there many times (our Native land). Winema National Forest : Phone: 541-883-6714or Phone: 541-783-4001 or email to kfletcher@fs.fed.us

thanks for the info Ewksiknii Achomawi...

I am not too far from Klamath. We (my lady and I)will be making a trip north this year maybe we will take the time to stop and gather poles.
