Quillwork?

I was wondering why there wasn't a quill work category on the gathering section. I know that it is hard tedious work from what I read and heard about. But it is quickly becoming a lost art. I feel that if there was some sort of category for quill, that it might interest more people about the art. I would like to hear any comments about this issue. We have lost so much already I would hate to see us lose something so beautiful and so natural as quill work. I posting a poll to see how others feel about this.

i think it would be neat if there was a quillwork catagory ive always wanted to learn but nobody seems to know anything or want to teach. i'm very interested in learning... if anyone has any ideas i sure would appreciate it a great deal.:)

I think it falls under general crafts...if you check the archives it has been discussed before, but even not having done quillwork myself, I can see by instructions in books that it would be a bit difficult to describe online in this kinda format.
If you want to discuss it, please feel free to start a thread in general crafts. You are not alone in wanting to know more about it. It is one of those things I have always wanted to learn, but have not had enough time myself to just sit down and try.

If it falls under general crafts then why doesn't beadwork fall under the category also. I mean why does it get so much attention. Sure beadwork is beautiful but it is also pretty easy time consuming but it is not that difficult to learn pretty much everything I have learned I taught myself. If it is so hard then there must be a way to explain it i mean break it down. Although it may be hard to explain I think it may be worth the effort to try and teach it. I am fairly young and I would love to teach my son this beautiful art when he is old enough. I think That if there is expierienced quillers out there they would be able to break the concepts down.

I do not see the need for quillwork to have it's own forum. It is not that beadwork is better than quillwork or anything like that. It just boils down to the fact that the same argument could be made for any number of different craft/arts like featherwork or silverwork are examples. If we started to expand the craft forums like that pretty soon we would have so many forums that they would set dormant until a new member joined and decided to ask questions about it. Yes, things can kind of get buried in the general crafts forum do to the number of topics discussed, but by simply checking in the forum regularly one can find them.

I to do quillwork and agree that the skill is not as widespread as many others, but I do not find quilling any more difficult than beading, it's just a different skill. We have often discussed it and answered questions and shared knowledge about it. I understand and admire your interest in promoting it, but I just do not see the need for a new forum at this time.

With that said, would you now consider starting a new thread and sharing some of your insights on quilling?

I was not saying it is any harder than beadwork... what I was trying to say was that it would be harder to type out without diagrams for beginners and such to understand. As for beadwork, I would think that part of the reason for it's own section (this is just a guess, I was'nt here when the forum was created) is because there is so many folks with questions and tips and there are so many style of beading and types of beads.

One other thing you can do though... if there are topics on quillwork, there are actions at the bottom of the page that lets you be notified when someone posts on that topic so that you don't have to keep searching for it each time.

I for one would enjoy hearing more talk on it and tips for the day when I do get to try it out.

I wouldn't might seeing a thread on how to do quillwork, like Blackbears Applique Intructional thread in the beadwork forum. If anyone has a digital camera and is willing to take the time, maybe you could share your knowledge witht the rest of us. i know from another thread Warhoop said he doesn't have a camera, but maybe someone else who knows how to do quillwork does and would be willing to teach the rest of us. How about you POWWOWBUM49?

I have no problem helping/teaching folks but I do not have a digital camera or even a scanner. If someone wishes to start a thread up or has specific questions fell free to ask and I am sure folks on here like myself would be more than happy to try and answer.

Ooooooh, that would be a great idea. I think quillwork is so beautiful, but I have absolutely no idea on how to get started with it. Im still trying to master the beadwork, but I would certainly be interested in trying out quillwork in the near future. Is there any books out there someone can suggest ?

There is a book called the Quill Work Companion. by Jean Heinbuch. It is excellent. It doesn't get into which peoples used what kinds of wrapping but it gets in depth on how to start quilling. I would reccomend this book. But it is always helpful if anyone who has done this to give you a few pointers.:Chatter

It would be wonderful.. I just finished a Lakota Cradle board in quill work. Put in a few hours on that. I do need to find out about the straps though.

You know, if there were more posts and threads about quillwork, it could rate its own catagory.

But don't get me wrong, I LOVE quillwork. I took a class once and got lots of books (somewhere) and if I had the time I'd do a tutorial on each of the different styles and how to do quills and stuff.

So keep posting, if you want a quillwork catagory let's see it!

yea i wouldn't mind learning quillwork AND featherwork ... guess i'll havta find someone round these parts who will be willing to take me under the wing .. lol. it is REAL hard to find people who can do these types of work and willing to teach what they know, sometimes it's like "i'm making money doing this and if i teach there goes my money?!?"
