My one and only time messing (I won't say working, what I did was not working. I see why in the old days there was a society for quillwork) with quills, I found them everywhere I went for days. My PhD advisor found one in the upolstery of a chair in the lab -- ouch. Last time I visited my grandma, I stayed in a hotel in Chadron and there were quills stuck in the carpet. I felt perfectly at home adding a layer of beads, LOL.

i havent done any wrapping yet, although i did get some medicine wheel blanks from crazy crow. i was thinking how hard could it possibly be. yeah, right. at this point my skills with the quills is such that i still think the only thing easy about quill work is screwing it up |

Actually wrapping is the easiest quillwork I've tried. I got the plastic kind of medicine wheel shapes cuz the rawhide ones at Buffalo chips were so uneven.
But the first one I did, I cut out of rawhide myself and was kinda uneven, but after it was wrapped, it looked sharp. Just slightly overlap the quills on the inner edge of the circle, and figure out how you want to cover the unwrappable parts (where the sections join) and you're off! |

wrapping quills
When wrapping quills on medicine wheels I started in the center. Use thinner quills, fat ones will cover lots of areas quickly but.... are hard to manage especially on a wheel. I honestly only have done a few wheels, most my wrapping is done on rawhide pieces. I prefer to do banded quillwork on leather.

Starting and stopping is pretty easy. To start you make a wrap, twist the ends together and then make another wrap covering the blunt end. Leaving about 1/4" of the blunt end to wrap over is usually sufficient.
To end you just tuck your pointy end back under the last several rows. I have tried to end by wrapping back around the last row, then tucking. To start a medicine wheel, what I did was to bend about 4 quills in half and lay them over the outer edge and up one of the spokes. That covers the space that would be impossible to wrap - where the spoke meets the wheel. Then start wrapping over those quills to hold them in place. I never covered the center of my medicine wheels, but I was thinking about making a woven X of quills in the center, then wrapping over the ends. Dang, now I want to dig out my quills and get wrapping! |

medicine wheels
I never stopped. I have been working on the door for the tipi, and new tinklers. Got the tinklers mostly done but.... gotta order Deer toes. Know anyone with about 200 or so willing to sell? Door is almost done. then on to the rosettes and ownership tabs. Winter is here.... (quilling season ya know!) If it stands still long enough, I can put quills on it.

Jon you do some nice work. The cradle is especially nice.
I have tried my hand at quilling and it is a challenge, more difficult than beadwork. I think I could get things less crooked if I practiced more.... BTW, have any of you seen the completely quilled dress and legging/moccasin set that was offered on eBay a while back? Fantastic! Last edited by Czechy; 01-23-2007 at 10:38 AM. Reason: spelling |
