Ribbon question

For my tradish Choctaw hat I have a beaded hat band on it now but the traditional way is by using Rayon Ribbon. I haven't been able to find any and don't even know what it is. Can anyone help me find some? Thank you.

Also just thought of this what is the best way to start learning to do beadwork I really want to learn. Thank you.

Are you talking about tafetta?

As far as beadwork goes it all depends on what type of beadwork you are wanting to learn how to do. There are tutorials on here for applique and loomwork, I know we have discussed the other types of beadwork as well. You can also check out the videos(think they are on DVD now) by inner circle. You can also find them online from places like amazon, crazycrow and nocbay.

I don't think I'm talking about tafetta all the sources I read all say rayon. I'm told it's a type of material but haven't had any luck finding some. Thanks for the info about the videos.

Rayon was invented in 1885, while taffeta was invented around 1782. So it is possible that either was used. A lot of ribbonwork done by the Oklahoma tribes, was done in taffeta which originally made me think that is what you were talking about. Both materials were man-made replacements for silk.

CrazyCrow carries a 3" tafetta ribbon that is made of Rayon.

Just to clarify some of the confusion here. Rayon is a material substance, i.e. a fiber type. It is what the fabric is made of, like silk, nylon, cotton, wool, etc. Taffeta is a fabric type, such as satin, velvet, broadcloth, etc. They can be made of different materials. So there is Rayon taffeta, and also silk taffeta, acetate, polyester, and others. They are all teffeta if they are a plain, tight weave with a smooth, crisp finish. The old ribbonwork was mostly silk taffeta, but was other types as well.

Thank you soooooo very much! They do have it and I assume it is the right stuff because they call it rayon so as soon as I get money and a new bank account I will be getting my traditional ribbon. Again thank you!

YEAH!!!! Glad to help. I've been thinking about trying ribbon applique myself; I have a nice book on it, and it's sure traditional for our tribe.

I hadn't even known what it was. I'd like to learn beading and basket weaving since that's really traditional for my tribe
